Seat belt safety.

belt safety Monday night during the Community Safety Night program in West.
Several booths and games with seat belt safety in mind were available at
Monday's event.
As Mary's School nears its
100th rirthday, school board
membr s have set a goal to raise
$600,( 30 for the school's
perma ent endowment trust
fund b September 1999.
The rchool will celebrate its
100th rear as an educational
institu e that year and has set
the got for the endowment trust
fund to coincide with this event.
"The trust fund has been
established earlier, but has been
kind of dormant," Jim Maguire
with the trust fund said Monday.
"This is the first real push we've
had to get donations for this."
"There are many ways that
people can give a gift to the trust
fund and receive federal and
estate tax benefits," Maguire
explained. Some of the methods
of giving, explained in a brochure
on the endowment fund, include
cash, stocks, bonds, mutual
funds, property, business gifts
and life insurance.
In an effort to better inform
those interested in making
endowment fund donations, St.
Mary's School Board is
sponsoring an hour long seminar

St. Joseph's Hall in West. Daniel
Palmer, a Texas board certified
tax attorney who specializes in
estate and gift tax law, is set to
be the guest speaker.
Anyone wishing to attend this
seminar may call the school's
office at 826-5991 or St. Mary's
Catholic Church of the
Assumption rectory at 826-3705.
Maguire said the purpose of
the endowment fund is "to help
insure the continuing operation
of the school. All the interest
earned (from this permanent
fund) must go to the operation of
the school."

Scott seeks election
to West School Board
West resident
Connie Lea Scott
has announced
her candidacy for
the West School
Board.
During the
pa3t six years she
has come to know
and love many of
the people of
West. She decided
to move to West
because it was so
much like my
hometown. "I am
proud to be a part
of the West Com-
munity and love
living here,* she said.
"As a resident, taxpayer, and parent, I am inter-
ested in the West Community and ita school system.
I am concerned about the letters printed in The West
News from the School Board, Teachers, CEE Mem-
bers and other concerned citizens. West is not unique
in its problems. Many small, close-knit communities
face similar situations. Sometimes it takes a new-
comer looking from the outside to aee what the people
within have difficulty seeing. I hope to be a part of the
solutions and not the problems of the WISD and West
Community.
