Lady Trojans lose to Connally and Robinson
The West Lady Trojans fell twice
in District 17-AAA action last week
as they lost a close S2-S0 game to
Connally and then played a spirited
game against Robinson before losing
64-42.
The fans got their money's worth in
the West-Connally game on Jan. 30 as
they saw West grab a 15-14 first
quarter lead and 26-20 halftime lead.
The Lady Trojans were ahead 42-36
following three quarters.
"It was an exciting game for the
fans, but a disappointing loss for a
team that is struggling for a win,"
West Coach Kim Nutt reported. Con-
nally made a shot at the buzzer to seal
the win.
"We had built up a good lead, but
we were unable to handle the press
and we committed too many turn-
overs. 1 had a great effort from the
team, but we just could not pull out the
victory," Coach Nutt said.
Kelley Whitehead netted 16 points
for West followed by Kathy Sykora
with 9, and Tonya Plsek, 8.
West traveled to Robinson last
Friday and played the district-leading
Rockettes and fell behind early.
Robinson led 19-8 in the first quarter
and 36-20 at halftime.
"Robinson used tremendous
quickness and a tough full-court pres-
sure defense to stop the Lady Tro-
jans," Coach Nutt said. "We got be-
hind early and had to play catch-up
ball. We put together two good quar-
ters, but it takes four quarters to be
ahead at the end."
Merideth Hardwick was the lead-
ing scorer for West with 16 points.
Armour led all scorers with 25 points
for Robinson.
"It is difficult for the girls and for
the coaching staff to not have more
victories this year, but overall our
attitude is good and we represent our
school with pride and determination.
I wish the girls could have experi-
enced more success on the scoreboard
this year, but overall we have grown
as a team and hopefully the maturity
will carry over in the year's to come,"
Coach Fuller concluded.
Trojans beat Connally in District 17-AAA action
The West Trojans split a pair of
games as they competed in the second
round of District 17-AAA basketball
action last week.
"It's the best game we played all
year," was the way West Coach Ken
Holley describes his team's 73-63
victory over the Connally Cadets
before a partisan home crowd on Jan.
30.
This was the West team's best of-
fensive game of the year as they shot
their way to a 49-39 third quarter lead
after trailing 26-25 at halftime. This
was a game where the Trojans seemed
to put it altogether offensively. "We
made the shots," Coach Holley said.
Jimmy Morgan had his best offen-
sive game this season as he scored all
of his game high 21 points in the
second half. Morgan connected on
four three-point shots in the half.
David Eubanks also had a high scor-
ing night as he tallied 20 points fol-
lowed by David Woodard with 15 and
Kevin Janek, 8.
As a team, West made a season
high 23 free throws in 31 attempts.
West then traveled to Robinson on
Friday for a game against the Rockets.
The Trojans were never able to re-
cover from a slow start as they lost 51 -
42, despite a good fourth quarter ef-
fort.
West trailed 18-6 in the first quar-
ter and 29-13 at halftime. The Rockets
were ahead 35-21 following three
quarters. West poured in 21 points in
the final quarter to make the game
close. "We finished strong in the
fourth quarter and had a chance to win
(as West) pulled within six late in the
game, but couldn't get over the hump.
I was real pleased with how hard we
played at the end.”
Poor shooting again plagued the
West team as they made only 14of45
shots from the field.
On the Connally game, Coach
Holley said the "crowd was great The
crowd has responded better and better
each year."
Along with praising the team for
their improvements during this sea-
son, the West coach said team man-
ager John Pescaia had been a big help
to the team. "He does a lot of things
that go unnoticed, but he is an intricate
part of the team."
The Trojans were scheduled to
host Marlin this Friday night in Trojan
gym. Marlin and Gatesville are cur-
rently tied for first place in the district
standings.

New district alignment >
Beginning with the 1990-91 school year, West is scheduled to compete in-
District 11-AAA in both football and basketball, according to the tentative
district alignment released Feb. 1 by the Texas University Interscholastic
League.
West will join Hillsboro and Whitney in District 11-AAA along with
Alvarado, Glen Rose and Kennedale. West, Hillsboro and Whitney were all
members of District 17-AAA the past two years. The new District 17-AAA
alignment includes current members: Gatesville, Marlin, Robinson, Connally
and La Vega with the addition of three schools (Lorena, McGregor and Troy)
up from the Class AA ranks.
West ISD Athletic Director Mark Johnson said he was "very surprised" to
learn that West would be moving to the new district. ”1 didn't think we would
be changing" he said while adding he thought West would remain in the same
district with Connally, La Vega and Robinson.
Coach Johnson said the new alignment will not be official until Feb. 21 and
the new district alignment for volleyball has not been released yet.
On the District 11 - AAA alignment, Coach Johnson said his team West will
be around the mid-size of schools as far as the number of students attending
high school was concerned. In District 17-AAA, West and Whitney were the
schools with the smallest high school enrollments.
"We are excited about our chances," Coach Johnson said and the chance to
compete against schools more the size of West "will help our whole athletic
program."
With the addition of: McGregor, Lorena and Troy to an already tough 17-
AAA field, Coach Johnson said it will make that district probably the "toughest
AAA district in the state."
Schools put in the AAA classification have enrollments ranging from 285
to 689. West turned in a figure of 401.
West JV 61, Robinson 58
ROBINSON - West Trojan JV out scored Robinson 20 -14 in the final
quarter to win 61 -58 in a Feb. 2 game in Robinson.
Robinson led 16-10 after the first quarter and 26-24 at halftime. West then
trailed 4441 following three quarters.
Danny Youngs was high scorer for West with 29 followed by Brian Vrba,
12, Chris Pavlicek, 8 and Tony Kubacak, 6.
Frost 83, Penelope 39
FROST - Frost remained undefeated in district action as they beat Penelope
83-39 in a Feb. 2 varsity game.
Leading scorers for Penelope were; Sterlin Rivers, 12, Ricky Adams and
Brian Leathers, 10 points each.
