have secured a poll tax receipt. This
is approximately 3,(Hit) less than
last year. The books show 770 ex
emption certificates issued, which,
on the face of the returns, show
9,818 qualified voters.

that people residing in the countrj
precincts outside o'" Sherman and
Denison do not have to secure those
exemption certificates in order to
vote, there will he at least 1,357
more voters than the books show,
making a grand total of 11,713
voters in Grayson county who can
exercise that "privilege at the polio
if thev so desire.
Sherman has had approximately
500 more votes than she now has
and Denison has had a thousand
more than the books show this year

together than ever before in their
history, Sherman showing a total of
1,920 and Denison 1,968, Denison
leading Sherman by oly 12 voters.

them, were built by Frank Morgan,

tractor and the other by Tom Hef-
ton. Mr. Jones has also just com-
pleted a handsome residence on his
farm north of town.
The Y. M. 43. A. bowling contest
opened last night with a rather
dose game. Teams No. 1 and No.
rolled the opening games. Team
No. 2 won last night’s contest by
197 pins. Russell Langford of
Team No. 1 and Edward Richardson
of Team No 2 tied for the high
score of 166 pins. The total scores
for each team were: No. 1, 1527:
No. 2, 1724. The next game w.iil
be rolled by tea^ns No. 2 and 3 on
Thursday night at 7:30.

The lookout committee of the
civic league believes the city can
he made to appear better to the eye
of the stranger as well as our citi-
zens if vacant lots are not allowed
to grow rank with weeds this spring
and summer. To accomplish good
ajopg this line the conuqittee has
suggested to ask people who have
lots to report to Mrs. Silas Hari
Mrs. D. G. Griffin and they will try
to interest boys and young tnen in
cultivation of the iols.
The senior class at Austin col-
lege, headed by L. F. Winston,< pres
ident of the class. Prof. L. J.
Mitchell, President T. S. Clyee of
the college, and the entire class
participating, commemorated Texas
independence Day, Thursday, by
planting a tree on the campus. The
party gathered at twilight and after
a short formal ceremony the tree
was placed in the ground. The
variety of sycamore, and the event
is one that starts an epoch in ob-
serving the day here, and one which
an effort will be made to have oth-
er schools follow.

when an allied fleet

the straits.^ Four battleships are
