by thousands, was only an index to the
popular heart. The battle cry of the
meeting was “War and annexation,"
NOV. 25,1873.} »nd it has filled the whole city'. Bets
are freely made that troops will be
ordered out within a week after Con-
gress meets.
And thus it is all over the country.
The people feel the Spanish insult
keenly, and demand retaliation.
Nothing but the punjphment of Spain
and the annexation of Cuba will sat-
isfy American citizens.

THE AVAR FEELING.
The dispatches indicate the war
feeling to be at fever heat in the lead-
ing cities of the Union, North and
South.
The dispatches state that in New
York the people are unanimous in
favor of war, and they are anxious to
hear that our government is taking
hostile steps in that direction. Sec-
retary Fish is spoken of in anything
but complimentary terms for his evi-
dent toadying to the Spanish Repub-
lic, while some compliment him for
waiting until the many wild rumors
are confirmed.
In Boston the war feeling is grow-
ing more intense hourly. Telegrams
on bulletins in front of newspaper
offices are devoured by excited and
indignant crowds. On street corners
men are talking about the probabili-
ties of war, and not a tew of them
use hard words against the adminis-
tration. It is probable that an im-
mense war meeting will be held at
Fanned Hall early this week, if the
government does not proceed to de-
termine measures in the meantime.
In New Orleans there is a univer-
Before Irving, of Nathan murder
notoriety, was moved from the Po-
lice headquarters, he wrote a con-
fession on eight pages of foolscap and
sent iUto the District Attorney. It
States that on the 15th of May, 1870,
Dan Kelley, Caleb Jenning, Mur-
wise, alias George Abraham, and
himself (Irving) were met by a man
named McNally in Madison Park.
The later had a whispcitd conversa-
tion with Kellev, and pointed down
on Twenty-third street. After Mc-
Nally went, Kelly told Irving he had
a good job ; that it was at old Nath-
an’s house and lie was a very rich
man. The family not being at
home, they would be let into the
house to work the safe without op-
position. At 1 o’clock on the even-
ing prior to the murder they all met
in Madison square by appointment.
After seeing McNally they waited
till morning, when they went to the
house. McNally* wiped his face with
a pocket-handkerchief, being a sign
that all was O. K. They then enter-
ed the house and yvent into the cellar,
where they waited five hours. Kel-
ley then went up stairs into the room
where the safe was ; Irving heard a
noise and went up to the same floor
and found things scattered about. lie
sayv Kelley wiping blood oil’his
hands. They got $232 in money,be-
sides hpnds, stock, etc. The safe
was opened before he reached the
room. Irving also noticed bloody
finger-marks on the jamb of the
door. lie, also, noticed blood on
Kelley’s shirt-bosom. They left the
house and got on the Third avenue
car and went clown town. Kelley
yvas excited. He said he had to kill
the old man. I did’nt mean to do it,
you know. That dog I got from
Lick Jones I left behind. Do y ou
think it will get us into trouble?
They then went into the house in
Norfolk street, where a woman wash-
ed Kelley’s shirt, for which he gave
her $20. Irving claims he can pro-
duce Nathan’s pocket-book,the bonds,
etc., and to prove that Kelley com-
mitted the murder, and will do so
if the District Attorney guarantees
not to prosecute him on any of the

The war feeling is high in Mem-
phis. The further insults which have
been offered to the government have
tended to create a respect for the
Stars and Stripes among Southeners,
such as they have not felt for many
years, and it is the general opinion
that a war with Spain would do
more towards reuniting the people
of this country than all the Congres-
sional legislation for the next fifty
years.
The city of Baltimore is in the
burning heat of feverish excitement.
Young and old, rich and poor, Dem-
ocrats and Republicans talk together
and agree the insult must be resent-
ed. There are no such words as
“rebel” or “vankee” noyv ; it is “on
to Cuba !’* War is demanded and
war the people imist have before the
fire of national indication isquenched.
A feeling for war for Cuba is be-
ginning to manifest itslf very strongly
in Chicago. The mass meeting of
the other evening, crowded a*.it .was
giving the desired gurantee, but Irv-
in demands the guarantee first, or he
will refuse to divulge anything. So
the matter noyvstands.
A friend of Mr. Guy’s admitted
to 11s in a conversation Monday, that
Mr. Perry had the support of the
merchants and business men. Very
well, we have said all along that
those who pay taxes and those who
desire an economical administration
of our city affairs, have more confi-
dence in Mr. Perry than Mr. Guy.
Now it is an economical administra-
tion that will benefit the workingman,
with few salaried officers and light
taxes, and men of financial and exe-
cutive ability at the head of our af-
fairs, immigration will pour in, cap
ital will seek investment in our city
in substantial and permanent im-
provements, those who are now out
of work will get good wages, and
“good times'* will again dawn in
Denison. All who sincerely desire
to see Denison prosper will vote for
Mr. Perry.
