in whteh the greet pertte* of the

United States Senate lost to the
Republicans, all their hope of main-
taining control of the government
depended upon their ability to re-
verse the present Domoeratio ma-
jority in the Lower House. Com-
mencing with Oregon they lost one;
next in Maine they lost two more;
threo more in Ohio, two in Indiana
and two in Iowa making ten in all.
They, gained one in Colorado which
leaves them still nine behind. As
tho Novembor elections will be
seriously nffectod by these Repub-
lican losses it is now a foregone
conclusion that tbo Democracy will
romuin masters of tbo Lower Houso,
thus giving them complete control
of the legislative branch of the
government alter the fourth of
March next. This makes victory
almost cortain in 1880, for no parly
over failed to win the presidency
when it had a majority in both
houses of Congress. Therefore to
every man who loves tho( name of
Democrat, and whose heart beats
high with tho hope of the restoration
ot tho faith of the fathers, this
happy angary of success brings
gladsome rejoicing.
But this is not all that Democrat'}’
has won. Ii has not only increased
its members of Congress, but in the
face of an almost superhuman effort,
has caried Indiana and saved to Iho
Unltod Slates Senate that eloquent
champion of western interests, that
most conspicuous of Greenback advo-
cates, Danieu W. Voriiees. Against
him tho fury of tho whole Republi-
can party of Indiana was turned,
for it was understood that if De-
mocracy won, he was to be
returned, and they fought as
brave men fight when weighty
issues confront them. Even
with the loss of their ablest loader
it is no small matter to overcome
the Republican party of Indiana.
But Democracy has triumphed, and
gloriously.
