There was a railroad accident near
Bath, England, on the ioth, and sev-
eral persons killed and hurt.
The steam yacht Orta via, was
seized in Brooklyn On the ioth, un-
der suspicion of preparing to sail
with an armed expedition for Cuba.
Colonel Forney has found an auto-
graph letter of Thomas Paine, while
ransacking old libraries in Londou.
it is addressed to Geoage Washing-
ton, and has that gentleman's indorse-
ment on it. The letter has been sent
to the National Museum at Philadel-
phia.
A singular accident occurred to a
lady in Dallas toe other day. In the
act of leaning over she struck her
head against something, driving a
hair-pin into her head fully two inches
Medical aid was promptly summon-
ed. The wound is pronounced dan-
gerous.
Quarrantine of ten days has been
proclaimed by Governor Kellogg
against the ports of Havana and
Vera Cruz, from the ioth of June.
Under the new regulation of the
board of health the ten days in the
case of all vessels bringing a clean
hill of health will begin to count
from the time of their leaving the in-
fected port for New Orleans.
A Berlin dispatch says the Tri-
bune of Posen has sentenced Bishop
Dr. Fouster, of Breslau, to a fine of
two thousand marks, or thirty-three
days imprisonment, for illegally ex-
communicating a priest.
Fourteen houses were burned in
Elizabethtown, Ky., June nth.
Several persons were injured by
jumping from windows. Loss,
$25, OCX).
The forest fires in Northern Penn-
sylvania continue their fearful rav-
ages. The citizens of many towns,
Including Stoddartsville. Evergreen,
Locust Ridge and Goldsboro, were
driven from their homes, and scores
of houses laid in ashes. Families
were driven miles through the forest
before the advancing flames, before
reaching a place of safety.
Tiie silver service ordered from
New York, for the Travis Rifles, of
Austin, as being the best drilled in-
fantry in the State, is said to be beau-
tiful and chaste in the extreme. The
Statesman lias this descriptive of the
service; “There is a tray thirty
nciies in length with embossed r nils
and insignia of the Travis Rifles on
cither side of the centre. A beauti-
fully embossed urn, flanked by rich-
y chased goblets, completes the ser-
vice.

Election Notice.
By authority of the city charter, and in
accordance therewith, I 'hereby order an
election for city officers for Denison, to
be held the ad Monday in June—14th
inst., at which time a mavor will be vot-
ed for, whose term of office will be two
years, a city Marshal, city Assessor and
collector and a Treasurer whose term of
office each will be one year, also two
councilmen from each ward, whose terms
of office will be decided by ballots whether
for one or two years each. Places of vot-
