extent in New York.
Hartranft’s majority in Pennsylva-
nia has been fixed at last at ij.150.
Advices from Panama are to the
1st. Dr. Parra has ti e votes of five
States, and is considered elected Pres-
ident of Columbia.
The Kansas and Missouri bridge,
which spans the Missouri and Lea-
venworth, has been placed in the
hands of a receiver.
Mr. S. Reminder committed sui-
cide at his home, in San Antonio
last Friday. Cause supposed to be
pecuniary embarrassment.
The inventor of tiie art of chro
molithography, Jeane Engelmann,
died recently in Paris. Prang was
the first to introduce this beautiful
art successfully in this country.
The Captain General of Cuba has
issued a decree prohibiting travel af-
ter dark, and warning ail citizens
that if they do so, they will be shot
at by the patrol on sight.
A cotton gin belonging to Doutlii!
and Davis, Elkhart, was burned Sat-
uiday morning last. The gin house
and about eight bales of cotton wen
destroyed. Loss about $1500. No

tion of Laws of Nations, died at
Worcester Mass., Saturday, the 13th
after two davs illness.

Joyce’s attorneys withdrew their
motion for a new trial Friday morn-
ing, and asked sentence to be passed.
Joyce made quite a lengthy speech,
in which he declared his innocence
and branded tiie witnesses who tes-
tified against him perjurers.
Judge Krekel remarked, before
passing sentence, that he was per-
fectly satisfied of his guilt, and as
sessed iiis punishment at three years
and a half in the penitentiary and
two thousand dollars fine.
A short time will he given the
prisoner to make some necessary
business preparations, and then he
will he turned over to the Warden of
the penitentiary.
The body of Capt. Wolfe, the
Galveston pilot who went out on
board the City of Waco, has been
found near where the steamer went
down. As Capt. Wolfe was an ex-
perienced pilot and seaman, there is
no hope that any of those on board
the burning vessel escaped. It is
thought their bodies will be recov-
ered.

R. E. Scribner, of Racine, \Vis
Cousin, was found dead in his room
at the Grand Pacific Hotel Chicago,
about one o’clock Saturday afternoon
having shot himself through the
breast and inflicted wounds which
proved fatal immediately, lie had
in his room three bottles of lauda-
num and a hangman’s cord. He lei,
no explanation of his act.
Cent. Black, of the English hark
Luciude, was on his upper deck late
Monday night and saw the flames
burst out suddenly on the City oI
W aco, forward, and sweep aft. en-
compassing the deck from stem to
stern in a few moments.
Not a bitigie individual has survi-
ved the terrible catastrophe which
( ccured within six miles of Galves-
ton, and in the midst of a fleet of
finirteeen vessels. Fifty-five persons
were launched into eternity. The
loss of the steamer and her people
has gone into history as one of the
most terrible anti heartrending
catastrophes that ever happened on
tiie Gulf.
Constitutional Convention.

Austin, Nov. 13. 1S73.
The convention met pursuant to ad-
journment. Prater by Rev. Mr. Willen-
berg.
A resolution was off.-red amending the
ules so as to limit debate to one speech
if five minutes duration. On motion tne
rules were suspended and tiie resolution
idopted.
Unfinished business—the Judiciary Ar-
ficle—Was taken up, the pending question
oeing the motion to reconsider the vote
efu.'ing to change the salaries of Supreme
fudges to $3550. Call of the house or-
,ered.
Owing to the high pressure tinder which
the Convention was working, so inflny
hanges proposed, most of them based on
ne creation of a Court of Appeals, it is
Impossible to give a clear account of the
proceedings now. The result of it all
was that the term of Supreme Judges was
changed to six 1 ears, the call of the I louse
suspended on German’s amendment, and
salaries fixed at $3330. The terms of Dis-
tri t Judges were ma le four years anil sal-
aries $2500. Mot 00s were made to re-
consid r the votes on 'liese changes, and
'.hose motions laid on the table.
