learn that tiio county commission-
ers’court decided upon tho billow-
ing appropriation of county funds :
1. All occupation taxes shall be
placed to tho credit ot the jury
fund. Tho sum of 51,000 shall be
set nsido out of tho building fund
to the crodit of the jury, to replace
amounts fiom jury fund used in con-
struction of courthouses; provided
such amount remains in tho treasury
niter paying all claims against such
building fund.
2. All county poll taxes shall con-
stitute a road Hind.
3 One-third of direct advalorcm
tax shall constitute tho county fund.
4. One third of a direct nil vain roar
tax shall constitute tiio building
fund.
5. Ono third of direct advalorcm
tax sbii.l constitntc a fund for tile
payments of debts awarded prior to
April 18, 1870. All fines and for-
feitures due the county mnysbo paid
in county striped any diameter. All
occupation taxes may bo paid in jury
scrip. The one-third direct ndvalo-
rem tax levied for general county
purposes may ho paid in warrants
on llie county fund proper. All
taxes not payable in scrip as abovo
provided shall bo collected in
money.
Public School Entertainment.
The ontortiiinmcnt which waste
have been given by tho pupils of
our public school on Friday even-
ing last, was postponed till to-night
on account of unfavorable weather.
Accordingly it will come off to-night
at tho school buildidg. Doors open
at half past 7 o'clock. Admission
25 cents.
Airs. Barman, 84 years of age, a
native of Hanover, Germany, arriv-
ed in our city yesterday from Ash-
land, Boyd Go., Ky. She was ac-
compli n ted by her children, grand
children, groat grand children, and
great great grand children, repre-
senting 11 v o generations. Slio is ac-
tive and smart as most women at
thirty. The family will settle near
Denison.
A horseman rode into town on
Sunday and hitched* his hoise on
Rusk a von no near tho corner of
Alain street and left it for a short
time' When ho returned lie found
his rifle which ho had left attached
to his saddle, was gone. Ho called
upon tho authorities furnid to find
it, and after it short search tho gun
was found in tho rear of tho build-

The stockholders of the above
road met ut the offleo of tho com-
pany, in Lawrence, Texas, Wednes-
day, Jan. 9th, at 2 p. m. President
Bnrweli, chairman ex officio called
tho meeting to order. Before pro-
ceeding to I tininess, an ovation of
music was offered by the Lawrence
Glee Qlubnnd String I la n^. It was
meant as an expression of good
cheer in the prosecution of this
work. /
Mayor Smith made a few appro-
priate remarks to which one ot the
stockholders responded.
Great interest was manifested as
the business proceeded. Almost ev-
ery stockholder was represented in
person or by proxy. Henderson,
Grayson ami Kaufman comities
were hero united in common inter-
est, an earnest gl a fuluro enlarge-
ment. Dr. Orr read a report a.-
Secretary, and Dr. Pyle made a re-
port as treasurer, which showed
gratifying results of the years’
work. A siiiiit of local rivalry
came to the surface, and awakened
a spirited discussion which deferred
tho election of a new directory till
the morning of tho second day,
when tho following directory was
unanimously chosen: J. Bin-well,
of Lawrence; II. J Snow, of Kauf-
man; Jas. Orr, of Lawrence; Henry
J-jrwin, of Kaufman; J. AL McDon-
ald, of Alliens; J. R. Jones, ol Gos-
hen; A. W. Achison, of Denison. Jn
accordance with a unanimous reso-
lution of instruction the directors
elected tho following officers tor tho
ensuing year :
J. Bin well, President, II. J. Si ow,
vicc-Prcsidonl; Jus. Orr, Secretary,
Jas. A. Bennett, Treasurer pro loin.
The re-election of Col. Bin-well to
tho presidency by a unanimous eon
cession of the stockholders, was a
deserved compliment to Ins integri-
ty as it man, arid his efficiency ns an
officer. AVe congratulate Dr. Snow
upon his re election to the dfroetory,
and his promotion to the \ ice Pres-
idency. Jits Imppy disposition is a
pledge of harmony in the board.
The ro election of Dr. Orr to tho
Secretaryship was a high mark of
confidence. It was appropriate that
bo invited liuid Us in pushing
work through. We believe there is
no occasion for alarm. No ono
neod doubt but that the road wilt be
ironed—and (hat at an early day.
Tlic company never stood upon as
solid foundation as it Uoos to-day.
The skies are clear, and the future
.hopeful.
People and stockholders will ex-
pect a vigorous prosecution of- the
work. Let everybody* contribute a
word of cheer with substantial to-
kens ol their interest, and all may

tho people of Eastern Texas.
Tho commissioners’ court will
meet on the second Monday in Feb-
ruary lor.the purpose ot levying the
tax tor tho present year. Wo learn
that sixty-t wo and u-linlf cents on
the hundred is the probable amount
that will be levied, a reduction of
twelve cents on the limn’lrcd from
tint of Iasi year. It is estimated
that ibis amount will clear Iho comi-
ty of all indebtedness, and render
a far greater reduction practicable
