We pubHtkhed, some days ago, a
letter seat to the Statesman from
Helen** Arkansas, written by •
woman who said she had been de-
serted in utmost want, when sick
and penniless, and among strangers,
by her husband, one Rev. P. A. C.
Lacey, so-called. The Fredericks-
burg Sentinel says that the woman
writes truthfully to the extent that
such a man was a preacher “at those
parts,” and extensively known. The
wife’s letter has been reproduced
everywhere, and it is time that the
good man Lacev.were “rising to ex-
plain.” —A us tin Statesman.

Mr. Beecher’s cross-examination
is fixing the impression made by
his direct examination. One fact
is very striking: During the lattei
he appeared as a gushing sort ot
person, frequently crying over the
pictures he drew ; during the cross
he is keen, alert, suspicious, often
remarkably forgetful and undei gieal
self-control. What is the meaning
of this difference?—Ar. T. Sun.

Last Monday there was a congre-

up all night, twigged out in white
