Harpers weekly is probably the
dirtiest of radical publications, and
has as little regard for truth as any
of them. It lias however, ceased
caricaturing the South, perhaps be-
cause the inventive ucnius of Nasi
has become exhausted in that direc-
tion, and it is now turning its atten-
tion to those who believe in or have
any respect for the Catholic religion.
New England would delight to sec
religious as well as political liberty
crushed out. The old spirit ol intol-
erance, which cropped out in the
days of Quaker proscription, still ex-
ists, and all it wants is a favorable
opportunity to show itself in active
persecution.

county line to Red River. The Em-
ersons, Yarbor, Dumas, Riever,
Thompson, Savage, Belcher and a
host of other rancheros had their
headquarteis in Grayson county.
Farming was a minor consideration 5
stock raising was the principal thing j
with a ma jority of our citizens ; every
farmer was ranchero on a larger or
smaller scale. We all lived a kind
of come-easy go-easy life. But few
made any money, but more Went
hungry.
When a new-comer dropped in
among us, we loaned him all the
cows he would milk; in fact he had
a right to milk all stray cows. It
was no uncommon thing to see fif-
teen or twenty calves in the milk
pen of a poor man or widow wo-
man, who did not possess a cow.
I'lie farmer was sure of a living.
If his (arm failed to yield it, he had
a fail-back on the pra’rie. Not so
now. Our lovely and attractive
country has drawn from the north,
east, south, and from beyond the
great briny deep.a continuous stream
of emigrants—and still they come.
Our lovely prairies, once covered
with waving gr; ss and flowers, and
specked with cattle, is now coveted
with large farms, and dotted with
farm houses. The rancheros have
gone west.

QUNTER & MUNSON,
The great scandal suit has finally
commenced in New York. The Sun
which gives a full daily report of the
proceedings, describes Mrs. Tilton’s
behavior on the first clay of her ap-
pearance ;
While Mr. Tilton could not see
his wife without turning half round,
he was barely out of her range of
vision as she looked at the speaker.
Site listened for an hour attentively,
and then for nearly as long a time
her eyes were scarcely once remov-
ed from the face of her husband.
Whether she was affected bv what
Mr. Morris said, or by Mr. Tilton’s
show of deep feeling, could onlv be j
guessed. Tears often came in her
eyes, her cheeks burned, and she
used her fan almost steadily. The
plain u('.softened allusions to the na-
ture of the charge against her and
Mr. Beecher were usually followed
by a brightening of color in her
