FLANAGAN INTERVIEWED
A Galveston News reporter has
interviewed Web. Flanagan concern-
ing the purpose of the Republican
Convention, and his own aspirations,
and succeeded in extracting from
him the fact that he does not like
the new constitution ; that he is not
a candidate for Governor—in fact
would not be Governor under the
proposed instrument, and that he
only speaks as one individual of
the Republican party ; but neverthe-
less he intimates that the object of
the Republican State Convention is
to take advantage of any mistakes
made by the Democrats. He fut-
ther thought to emulate Henry Clay
by saying he had rather had a party
to defeat the new constitution than
to be President of the United States.
After ascertaining the above facts(!)
the interviewer took a drink of slier
ry and withdrew, if Flanagan hau
given him the sherry when he first
called, the public would have been
spared the inflictions of his report.

The gates of Paradise;
St. Peter wiped his spectacles
And rubbed his ancient eyes;
And throngs of female angels came
With curious gaze the while,
Intent, as ladies always are,
To see the latest style.
The Saint put on his glasses then—
An observation took:
“What! what!” he said, “this traverses
The laws of •musn't look.’
“T'ed back in front! Piled up behind!
Twill never do, I fear!
The thing is too ridiculous—
You can not entei here.”

What did she do? My curious friend,
She got behind a tree;
And in a jiffy site was dressed,
As angels ought to be.
St. Peter kissed her then and said,
“Pass in, my little dear;
But mind, you musn’t introduce
Such naughtv fashions here ”
Celia Logan writes from New
York to the Hartford Commit:
“There is a lady in this city who was
once engaged to be married to John
Wilkes Booth, but broke oil' the
match and requested the return of
her letters, which he refused. Her
story goes that she never heard di-
rectly from him again until two
yeats after his reported death, when
a man called at her house at dusk.
She opened the door herself; he
handed her a sealed package and
disappeared. On opening it she dis-
covered her own old love-letters to
Booth, and a line unmistakably his
hand. It was; ‘I return your let-
ters.’ Inside the letters was a piece
of Cuban newspaper. She firmly
believes that Booth still lives.
