Rev. H. C. Harvey, pastor of the
First Presbyterian church at Kansas
City, was honorably vindicated by
his church on Sunday, 31st lilt.,
from charges preferred against him
during his recent visit to St. Louis.
Friday, May 29, was the anniver-
sary of Patric Henry’s birthday. It
is now, says the Richmond Whig,
• ninety-nine years (almost a centen-
nial) since this illustrious patriot
made the shingles of old St. John’s
Church rattle by his memorable ex-
clamation, “I know not what course
others may take, but as for me, give
me liberty or give me death !”
A London dispatch says on the
afternoon of Monday, Tune 1st, as
Prince Saxe-Weimar was leaving
his residenc0, to attend a levee, he
was fired at by an unknown assassin,
who made his escape. The Prince
was not hurt. He had previously
received threatening letters, as had
also the Duke of Cambridge and
Mr. Disraeli.
Another exploring missionary has
started to discover the source of the
Nile—Rev. Chas. New, an English
minister of the Methodist church.

tha M. Stafford is defendant, in suit tor
divorce, in the District Court of said
county, to take the depositions of Lucy
M. Craycraft, Peter Ford and Mehitable
Ford, residing near Glassford, Peoria
county, Illinois. These are therefore to
command you to publish this notice for
thirty days, in some newspaper, after
which commission will issue as provided
by law.

#300,000 FIRE.
A very destructive fire occurred
in Chicago, on the morning of the
istinst., in which the large brick
block, owned and occupied by M.
D. Wells, wholesale manufacturer
of boots and shoes was totally de-
stroyed. Total loss estimated at
$300,000, Building insured at $60,-
000, and stock at $250,000.
LYNCHED.
An aged and crippled lady named
Donaldson, residing on her planta-
tion, near Island No. 10, was bru-
tally murdered, a few days ago, by a
young man named Murphy, who
went to the house for the purpose of
robbing Mrs. Donaldson, who is
quite wealthy. He knocked her
down with a club and split her head
open with an axe. The alarm was
given by a negro woman in the
house, and Murphy fled, but was
pursued by the neighbors, caught
and hung to a tree.

Dispatches front France of June
1st, report a meeting of the Left
Center, in which action was taken
toward an alliance with the Right
Center. A motion was drawn up
declaring in favor of the establish-
ment of a Republican government,
which all the members of the Left
will sign in the hope that the Right
will support it when submitted to
the Assembly.
M. Gambetta is in Antere, where
he is to deliver an important speech
cn the political situation.
FEARFUL RAILROAD DISASTER,
A terrible accident occurred on
the Vandalia railroad about 5 o’clock
Monday, June 1st, three miles west
of Vandalia. A gravel train, in
backing up the hind car, jumped the
track and all the others piled on top
with the engine, completely wreck-
ing and smashing up all the cars and
engine, and killing Wm. Meyers, of
Terre Haute, brakeman ; also, Rob-
ert Wright, a messenger boy of Van-
dalia. Dan. Trimble, the conduc-
tor, was badly hurt. Wm. Ed-
mondson, brakeman, was badly
scalded. Hank, the engineer, was
badly hurt. Mike Cadden, the fire-
man, had his cheek cut open and ear
cut off. The engineer** leg was
broken and otherwise hurt by fall-
ing under the engine. Those who
are hurt ere not expected to live.
