A LOVE LETTER.
BY MARY A. DENISON.
Mv darling, darling mother,
j think of home to-night;
I see you sitting all alone
Beside the firelight;
And Spot is lying at lour 'eet
On the old iamb-skirt mat;
While opposite, with blinking eyes,
Purrs Tabitha, the cat.
The clock is ticking on the shelf,
The table ret for tea,
And Jack and Nell aw coming in—
You’ll all be there bu; ine—
While 1, vv.th twenty other boys,
At a long tabl _■ sit, *
And such a Babel of a noise!
You can’t imagin'.' it.
I thought to tell ot studies hard,
Of Algebi a and Greek,
But other things come uppermost,
Of which I'd rathe sp< ak,
0 mother sweet, i never dreamed
I’d miss your voice so much,
If I could only kiss you now,
Or feet the gentle touch
Of your dear hand ! We boys are rough,
Ami seldom care to show
The deeper curients of the heart,
Where love’s white I 'lies grow,
We laugh at tears and je-t at sighs,
But many a lonely night
There’s just a something in my eyes
That isn't laughter quite.
There’s nobody that smiles like you,
Or has a voice so rare:
1 seem to hear it when the birds
Sing in the summer air.
Our fellows laugh and call me odd,
And sentimental, too,
Because I take long walks alone—
’Tis just to think of you.
They say that I’m in love. W ell, yes,
1 rather think it’s so;
Anil 'tis a love that every year,
Seems tenderer to grow.
Yes, I'm in love with one whose life
Has been a model true;
A book whose pag s shine like gold,
And mother, dear, tuat’s you.
All, many a time when wrong has come
In almost angel guise,
To bid me dare and do, I’ve seen
The sadness in your eyes.
The wav you usen to look whene'er
Mv evil will had sway.
God bless you, mother, for your love
That keeps me pure to-day !

Oxygen forms eight-ninths of wa-
ter and half the ponderable matter
of the globe is made of this element,
l lie crowning wonder of it is, that
when, brought up by the magic ot
chemistry, it is but an invisible gas,
and seems the very type of spiritual
power. Nitrogen, the other element
of air, is obtained by removing the
oxygen. It was discovered by Ruth-
erford in 1774, and is a transparent,
tasteless, colorless, incondensable
gas. It is the antithesis of oxygen,
which is aggressive, nitrogen being
inert and passive. A burning cau-
dle is immediately extinguished in
this gas. It destroys life, and lienee
was called “azote” of old. It is es-
sential to the balance of Nature, and
is widely diffused. It is an import-
ant element of the vegetable king-
dom, of food and animal tissue; also
of powerful medicines, such as mor-
phia, etc., and of poisons, such as _________________________
strychnine, and pruetd acid.

An Invention Lost.—Daniel
Mossart is an ingenious watchmaker
who lias just been placed in the lu-
natic asylum at Kalamazoo, Mich.
For some years past he had been at
work upon a watch which, though
no larger than ordinary watches,
was to show quarter seconds, min-
utes, hours, days cf the week, days
of the month, and the names of
months, winding itself every fifth
time it should be opened. He had
oertected it and received a large of-
fer for tlie right to manufacture it,
when lie took the model apart one
day to make some needed repairs,
and was unaccountably unable to put
it together again. The consequent
mental excitement resulted in the
overthrow of his reason.
