Retired general drops CBS libel suit
NEW YORK (AP)—Retired Gen. William C.
Westmoreland ended his SI20 million libel suit
against CBS yesterday, but not before the 18-week
trial subjected the television network to a public
and sometimes embarrassing inspection.
Although the defendants were CBS and three of
its employees —correspondent Mike Wallace, pro-
ducer George Crile and consultant Sam Adams—
Westmoreland was in fact challenging the network’s
documentary, "The Uncounted Enemy: A Viet-
nam Deception."
Unlike Time magazine, which had to concede a
factual error last month when it was sued by former
Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon, CBS was
never proved wrong on a major factual issue. The
trial in U.S. District Cout shaped up as a matter of
which witnesses and documents to believe.
The network also changed its policies to require
more involvement by big-name correspondents who
narrate documentaries, after Wallace conceded that
he relied to a considerable degree on the work of
Crile and others.
Man imprisons wife, shoots son, seif
HOUSTON (AP)—Homicide investigators arc-
trying to find out why a Houston man chained his
wife to a piece of exercise equipment for two days
and then shot his 6-year-old son to death before
killing himself, police said yesterday.
John Edwards. 30, and his son. Jared, were
found shot to death Sunday at the family apartment,
police said.
Edward's wife, Sabrina, 29. told officers that
when she threatened to leave her husband on
Saturday, he chained her to the exercise equipment
fastened to a wall in the couple’s bedroom.
Mrs. Edwards said she was released once on
Sunday and allowed to take a shower. But Edwards
then chained her again to the exercise equipment,
securing her with a locking bicycle chain.
On Sunday, after hearing two gunshots from
another bedroom, she managed to throw a barbell
through a window and scream for help. Officers
were hoping to question the women later, police
said.
Mobil asks to question Mattox's sister
AUSTIN (AP)—A top attorney for Mobil Oil
Corp. said Monday the company wanted to ques-
tion Attorney General Jim Mattox’s sister to see if
she and a Laredo judge were “players” in a loan
agreement w ith South Texas ranc her Clinton Manges.
Thomas Asher of New York, a general counsel
for Mobil Oil, was the lead-off witness as the
second week of Mattox's trial on a commercial
bribery charge began.
Also appearing Monday was Houston attorney
Wiley Caldwell, who has said Mattox threatened to
cut off the bond business of Eulbright & Jaworski if
one of the firm’s attorneys. Thomas McDade, was
not stopped from trying to question Janice Mattox.
Asher said he hired Eulbright & Jaworski, and
McDade, to represent Mobil Oil in a SI.7 billion
lawsuit involving Mobil, the state and Manges.
Asher said a deposition taken from Manges told
of a meeting at Manges' ranch attended by Mattox,
the judge and Manges.
