Trail Riders set record
The 23rd Annual Pal-
acios Trail Ride was the
largest ride in recent
years and began with the
Kick-Off Dance and Auc-
tion on March 15.

for the Trail Riders by
buying a cake for SI,000.
The money for the Auc-
tion will go to scholar-
ships for the Palacios and
Blessing schools.
In the rain of March
1<>, the ride began with a
parade through down-
town Palacios and pro-
ceeded to Blessing where
a BBQ lunch was served
to 299 members. The ride
then continued to El
Maton for the dance and
campout. Braving a cold
north wind, the riders
continued the next morn-
ing to LeTulle Park to
prepare for the parade.
Hoot Gibson was elected
the new Trail Boss and
will serve for two years.
Lisa Marie Kubecka
was awarded a trophy for
b' -’g the youngest girl in
a agon with David Hat-
field receiving the young-
est boy award. Wes
Schneider was the young-
est boy on a horse and
H.J. Shoener the oldest.
Erna Jurek was given a
trophy for being the
oldest lady in a wagon
and Evalina Murphy was
given the hard luck aw-
ard. Randy Schneider
was named the most
congenial. Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Orsak of Temply
Hill. Maryland, received
the trophy for coming the
farthest to ride.
The Trail Riders ex-
pressed appreciation to
all those who helped
make the ride a tremen-
dous success.
Other events coming
up for the Trail Riders
included a donkey ball-
game. moonlight ride
and a play day. all under
the direction of new
president Ronnie Kube-
cka and Trail Boss Hoot
Gibson.
The riders will take
part in the Cresent Ride
Friday and Saturday.

Ruby Hahn Richard-
son, a kindergarten tea-
cher at Markham Elem-
entary School in the
Tidehaven Independent,
I District, has been
<>(!
named Elementary Edu-
cator of the Year by the
Association of Texas Pro-
fessional Educators.
Nominees from across
the state submitted re-
sumes and scrapbooks,
including personal back-
ground and professional
experiences. Each candi-
date was also interviewed
by a panel of ATPE
judges. ATPE is the sec-
ond largest education as-
sociation in Texas, rep-
resenting 35,000 mem-
bers. At the association’s
state convention in Mar-
ch, she received a floral
bouquet and a Texas
shaped engraved plaque.
The TJSD hosted a rec-
eption tea in her honor on
March 24.
Mrs. Richardson is a
native of Matagorda Co-
unty and a graduate of
Wharton County Junior
College and Southwest
Texas State College. She
received her master's
degree in supervision
from Trinity University.
She began her teaching
career in East Bernard.
Later she served as Curr-
iculum Coordinator at
Lackland AFB Element-
ary School. In 1979 she
returned to her home-
town area and began
teaching at Tidehaven.
Mrs. Ruby, as she is
known by her students,
resides with her hus-
band, A.T.. in Midfield.
Annual PTO Spring
Carnival set April 16
The PTO Spring Carni-
val will be held April 16
at Central Elementary
School. This year’s carni-
val will include clowns.

Viv Witte awarded scholarship
Viv Witte, Palacios Hi-
gh School business teach-
er, was recently awarded
an Alpha State Scholar-
ship by the Delta Kappa
Gamma Society Interna-
tional, a sorority for
women educators. This
scholarship enables the
recipient to pursue a
master’s degree. Mrs.
Witte's plan is to seek a
Masters of Business Edu-
cation degree at West
Texas State University in
Canyon, Texas.
Viv is a member of the
Matagorda County Zeta
Alpha Chapter of Delta
Kappa Gamma. She re-
cently served as record-
ing secretary for the
organization.
As a graduate of Blinn
Junior College and Sou-
thwest Texas State Uni-
versity, the recipient has
taught fourteen years in
Palacios Independent
School District. In her
fourteen years of teach-
ing she has had many
University Interscholastic
League shorthand and
typing contestants win on
the district, regional and
state level. She has also
taught Adult Continuing
Education classes in typ-
ing and shorthand, as
well as summer school.
She is active in com-
munity affairs. As a
member of the First
United Methodist Chur-
ch, she is a member of
the Rebecca Circle. She
is a charter member of
the Palacios Young Ho-
memakers and served as
secretary for the organi-
zation. As an Alapha
Club member she serves
as treasurer and has also
served as vice-president
and president.
In addition to commun-
ity affairs, her profe-
ssional activities have
ranged from working in
the Matagorda County
Texas State Teacher's
Association to serving as
secretary of the District
III Texas Business Edu-
cation Association. She
has also served on the
P1SD Faculty Council as
secretary and is presently
a sponsor of the Palacios
Future Teachers of Ame-
rica and is a member of
the Association of Texas
Professional Educators.
Viv is the wife of Mike
Witte, a history teacher
at Palacios Junior High
School.

at 11 a.m. and end at 3
p.m. In the event of rain
the activities will move
inside the cafeteria. Ev-

to purchase items for use
in the classrooms. Any-
one wishing to help, or
