Unemployment rate for
county climbs to 13.4%
The number of Individuals jobless in Matagorda County took
another leap upwards as 1993 drew to sc lore according to Mg*
flaunt* released by the Texas Employment Commission (TEC).

which estimates are available
from the TEC. It marked die

is still well below the high for
1993 of 14.7% recorded in June.
According to the TEC, Mata-
gorda County's civilian labor
force totals 17,123. Of those.
2,298 were without jobs during
November.

Only nine other Texas counties had higher unemployment rates
than did Matagorda County in November. Presidio County re-
ported a staggering 36.0% of its civilian labor force without jobs
during the month while 23.6% were unemployed in Maverick
County and 22.7% in Starr County. The other counties were Zavala
(19.2%), Willacy (17.7%), Hidalgo (16.0%). Orange (14.0%).

cutor to his staff in the capital
murder case against Markham
teenager Jason Cano.
Pnnk Briscoe was sworn in
by District Judge Jo Ann Ottis
as an assistant district attorney
for the case which has been
transferred for trial to Galve-
ston County.
Dun is accused in the De-
cember 1992 stabbing deaths
has successfully prosecuted
more than a dozen cases in
which the death penalty was as-
sessed. That experience is the
asset which was sought accord-
ins to Reis.
"“Although Ae death penal-
ty is not an option in this
particular case, Frank's wealth
of capital murder trial experi-
ence will be invaluable in this
case,’’ said Reis.
Although no specific trial
cases in Matagorda and Whar-
ton Counties, according to
Reis.
“We will not be forced to
postpone local trials as a result
of this out-of-county trial," he
said. “I have two very compe-
tent assistants who will keep
our schedule on track."

D.A. in Fort Bend County and

It was during his tenure in the
Attorney General’s office that
Reis met Briscoe.
“We cooperated in the trial
of two Wharton County cases;
one in Houston and the other
in Bellville,” said Reis. Both of
those cases were a result of a
two-year investigation in
Wharton County.
The addition of Briscoe for
this particular case will allow
the balance of the district at-
torney’s staff to prosecute
