door.The hurricane season is just
getting hot, so it’s time to be
prepared. I only wish there
could be an easy way to devise a
hurricane code, which could be
enforced for the whole hurricane
prone area. SBCCI has one in
the works which seems to cover
the ground for new construction;
but it must be passed and
enforced by each state, county,
or city. Since this would add to
the cost of a new building, it
would be difficult to enforce. Of
course the money spent would
be more than off set by savings
in insurance, not to mention the
human suffering involved. Bob
Sheets, director of the National
Hurricane Center, estimates that
hurricane Hugo's 6 billion in
damages could have been cut to 1
billion if buildings had been
sturdier.
How nice it would be to return
to your home after a hurricane to
find little damage done. This
would be well worth a thousand
or so extra. Maybe after the next
hurricane, we can get a code
passed!
Are you all ready for the
Shrimporee? Better get in and
help out. After all, the shrimpers
keep Palacios going, whether up
or down!
And then the fishing
tournament then the Bayfest!
And in between a few regattas
and bar-b-ques, etc. of course

several going on now. If you

and help me clean up the place.

council, from left, are: David Rolen, Chris Woll, Lucy
Mata, Beverly Watson and Donald Kopecky. The
certificate honors Mathis for his two years of service
with the Palacios Police Department. It also thanked
him for his recent efforts to save a three-year old boy
who drowned next to Turning Basin #3 in late June

Three new principals sign with PISI)
As a new school year ap-
proaches, there will be many
new faces in the Palacios Inde-
pendent School District (PISD).
The search continues for a
superintendent, but the district
tentatively set this Friday as the
deadline for applications. In the
meantime, most of the other ad-
ministrative positions in the dis-
trict have been filled, pending
approval by the PISD board of
trustees.
Robert Crager, who has a to-
tal of 18 years experience in
education, signed a contract July
20 as principal at Palacios High
School. He replaces C.R.

married and has one daughter.
His wife will be teaching at Cen-
tral Elementary.

"It's been a real pleasure to

"I think the Palacios
Independent School District has a
great reputation that extends far
and wide. That would be a good
feature to any educator,” he
commented.
When asked about his plans,
Crager said he is not going to
rush in any changes.
'Tm not one who believes in
turning things upside down and
starting all over again."
A not completely new face to
the district is Samuel White, who
signed a contract about July 1 as
principal at Eastside Elementary.
He takes over the position left
vacant by Linda Reaves, who
resigned at the end of the school
year.
White was a computer coor-
dinator/teacher in Palacios from
August 1980 to January 1988.
He has a total of 18 years of ex-
perience. His other experience

assistant principal at Van Vleck
ISD, an administrative assistant
for federal programs and tech-
nology at Gonzales ISD and
most recently, director of tech-
nology at Eagle Mountain-Sagi-
naw ISD, near Fort Worth.
"I'm very pleased to be back
in the community," said White.
"It's a good school district, a
good community and I have
some very good teachers to work
with."
Vanessa Kunefke, a first-
grade teacher at Central Elemen-
tary, has signed a contract to be
an assistant principal at Cent) .
