• Last week, nearly 200 people attended the
opjihing preview of the exhibit “La Salle’s
Joumfcy Into Texas” at the Matagorda County
Museum in Bay City. The display included arti-

"The Sun King: Louis XIV and the New
>forld“, a photo exhibit focusing on the life of
K ing Louis XIV.
“La Salle’s Journey Into Texas” is a travel-
ii g exhibit the subject of which is the fate of La
S Jlle’s ship the La Belle. The artifacts in the
exhibit include pewter plates, pottery, trade
items such as Jesuit rings and falconry bells,
and the centerpiece, a nearly 800 pound bronze
cannon excavated from the shipwreck site in
Matagorda Bay.
The exhibit will be in Palacios at the Court-
house Annex Oct. 4-30.
■Among the distinguished guests attending
the preview were Monique Rivjer, Consul of
France in Houston.
The La Belle was a personal gift to La Salle
from King Louis XIV and was run aground in
a squall in 1686 just off Matagorda peninsula.
