Passed away: Nov. 25,1981
I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead. - He is just away!
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land.
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you - 0 you, who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step and the glad return, -
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here;
Mild and gentle, as he was brave, -
When the sweetest love of his life he gave
To simple things: - where the violets grew
Pure as the eyes they were likened to,
The touches of his hands have strayed
As reverently as his lips have prayed:
When the little brown thrush that harshly chirred
Was dear to him as the mocking-bird;
And he pitied as much as a man in pain
A writhing honey-bee wet with rain.
Think of him still as the same, I say:
He is not dead - he is just - away!

The day after Thanks-
giving marks the tradi-
tional opening of the
Christmas shopping sea-
son. Many shoppers will
be searching high and
low for just the right toys
that they hope will light
up the eyes of their
youngsters on Christmas
morning. The Texas So-
ciety to Prevent Blind-
ness urges shoppers to
use common sense in
selecting gifts for the
special children in their
lives. Some types of toys
can pose serious injury
hazards to children, and
particularly to the young
eyes they are intended to
light up.

Americans ended up in
hospital emergency
rooms last year as a
result of toy-related eye
injuries and that nearly
70 percent of the victims
were under the age of
fifteen.
"Most of these injuries
were caused by common-
ly available toys,” said
RE. Margo, M.D., state
medical chairman for the
Society. "These include
toy guns, projectile toys,
self-propelled and flying
toys, slingshots, and
even such relatively
‘safe’ toys as dolls and
stuffed animals.”
Particularly alarming,
according to Margo, is
the fact that over half of
these injuries were caus-
ed by bows and arrows,
BB guns, pellet guns and
other air, gas, or spring
operated guns. ‘‘Wea-
pons such as these, when
handled as toys, can ob-
viously be extremely dan-
gerous," Margo said.
“There are two prime
safety facto:-, hat should
be considered in selec-
ting toys,” Margo con-
tinued. “First, is the toy
appropriate for the
child's age. And second,
how much adult super-
vision will be required,
and available, when the
child uses the toy. It is
also very important that a
child be instructed on
how to use the toy
properly and safely.”
Prevent Blindness off-
ers the following sugges-
tions to help shoppers
choose safe toys for their
youngsters this holiday
season:
-Look for toys made
from shatter proof and
flame resistant materials.
-Avoid toys with sharp
edges, points, nails, or
screws that are exposed
or can be easily exposed.
-Check for rigid inter-
ior frames or springs that
can easily puncture soft
outside fabric or plastic
coverings. - 1 * •
-Remember that all
projectile, flying, 1 and
self-propelled toys can be
dangerous.
-Be sure to consider
the child’s age and phy-
sical coordination' when
selecting toys.
Margo concluded by
saying, “A little fore-
thought and good judg-
ment can help make this
a safer and happier holi-
day for all our young
Texans.”_

Emergency drill at Wagner General
HOSPITAL STAFF AND emergen-
cy workers at Wagner General
Hospital swiftly organize their
efforts as they respond to an
emergency disaster drill recently.
The drill centered around a water
heater explosion that injured sever-
al people downtown. The “vic-
tims” were transported by ambu-
lance to the hospital who reacted
promptly and efficiently to the
realistic emergency. The recent
drill was one in a series over the
past several months that allows
hospital workers and doctors the
opportunity to test the coordina-
tion and reaction time of all those
involved should some type of
disaster or emergency occur in
Palacios. Following the drills, the
staff has an in-depth review of their
performance. [Beacon Photo by

Fall pond care makes for good fishing

Fall is an opportune
time to take a look at your
farm pond and consider a
few management options
which may lead to better
fishing next year.
Texas Parks and Wild-
life Department biologist
Joe Toole of Marshall
said although most Texas
ponds may be suffering
from low water levels,
this condition may be
beneficial from a ma-
nagement standpoint. "If
vegetation control, shore-
line maintenance or fish
eradication is needed,
this would be a good time
to take those steps,”
Toole said. “These
things are usually easier
to do at low water levels,
and the costs are general-
ly lower.”
■ Toole noted that shore-
line areas may be dredg-
ed in older ponds which
have suffered from years
of siltation and erosion.
Increasing shoreline
depth is an effective
method for preventing
excessive growth of a-
quatic plants.
“Early fall also is a
good time to stock chan-
nel catfish,” Toole add-
ed. “However, the pond
owner should remember
that if his pond already
contains adult large-
mouth bass, only catfish
longer than eight inches
should be stocked to
reduce predation,” he
said. Otherwise the bass
will eat the catfish.
There are a number of
sources of information for
pond owners. One is your
nearest department fish-
ery biologist. The depart-
ment also offers pond
