In season finale al Needville
Sharks aim for 4th in district
With their final thread of
hope for gaining the state
playoffs slashed in the last
week’s 24-0 loss to Boling,
the Palacios Sharks close
out their football semester
at Needville this Friday,
facing a must-win situation
over the winless Blue Jays
if they are to avoid an
undesired basement finish
in the district standings.
last place, alongside
Needville and possibly
Hitchcock.
Based on the Blue Jays’
winless trail and last
week’s 50-0 humiliation at
the hands of Sweeny, the
Sharks should have the role
of slight favorite going into
the season’s finale.
Coach Pat Walker's crew
will take a 2-7 overall and a
1-3 district chart to
Needville. A victory could
lift the Sharks to a fourth
place finish in district,
their best showing within
recent years. On the other
hand, a loss to the Jays
would skid Palacios into
Meanwhile, the district
title and two playoff
positions are going down to
the final shoot out with the
status of front-running Van
Vleck, Sweeny and Boling
still unresolved. Van Vleck,
the state’s 9th ranking
Triple-A team, had some
troubles before kayoing
Hitchcock, 39-24, last week
and building its district
mark to a perfect 4-0.

Sweeny and Boling are just
a step behind with 3-1
records.
In this week's show-
down, Boling plays ' Van

could force a three-way
title tie by upsetting Van
Vleck while Sweeny stabs
Hitchcock, Boling would
need a near lop-sided win in
order to grab one of the two
credentials into the state
playoffs.
Boling’s win over Pala-
cios could have been
more lop-sided than what
it was as the Bulldogs
had three apparent
touchdowns erased by
penalties and the 'Dogs
were striking for another
score when time finally
expired.
The Shark offense was
hampered by the loss of
senior pass-catching end
Bill Quinn, who suffered
a broken collarbone in a
freak injury during the
pre-game warmup drill.

Brother Jerry, who

After Boling drove 87
yards in nine plays to

Bouldin legged the ball

with 61 yards in 17 carries,
while the other ball
carriers either lost
yardage or broke even for
the night.

Sandsharks divided their
outing against Boling’s
junior high teams last
week with the eighth
graders romping to a 26-0
victory and the seventh
graders dropping a 20-0
decision.
Defense was the key
for the eighth graders as
they won their fourth
victory in seven starts.
Bobby Macklin, Chuck
Machacek, Oscar Alanis,
Michael Woolsey and
Sanh Dinh sparked the
defense that held Boling
to only four first downs
and repeatibly gave the
offense good field posi-
tion.
Quarterback Greg Gar-
cia opened the scoring for
the Sandsharks with a
10-yard TD scamper in
the first quarter. Oscar
Giles scored the next
three touchdowns on
runs of 50, 10 and 5
yards. Fullback Darell
Buckley, who had several
long gainers, scored a
two-point conversion.
The seventh graders,
who found their record
dropping to 3-4, were led
on offense by Rh
by Rhett Rob-
inson, Tony Kacer end
Todd Corporon, while
Jerry Martinez, Greg
Hunter and Houston Her-
lin had standout mo-
ments on defense.
The Sandsharks close
out their season this
Thursday with games at
Needville.
