Wednesday Club
Hears Book Review
Of 'Iron Mistress'
The Wednesday Club met in the
home of Mrs. Olive Nestor Jan-
uary 5 with 35 members and guests
present to hear a book review by
Miss Ernestine Bright of Boling.
Miss Bright is a talented review-
er and kept the audience in rapt
attention as she reviewed “The Iron
Mistress,” by Paul Willman. The
book is a very comprehensive his-
torical work on the life of James
Powie, adventurer, slave trader,
gambler, and soldier.
At the age of 33 James Bowie
went to San Antonio, where he
met and fell in love with the beau-
tiful Ursula Veramendi, daughter
of the vice governor of San An-
tonio. They were married and two
children were born to the union.
While Bowie was away from
home on business his wife and
children and her entire family died
of the plague. He met Sam Hous-
ton and teamed up with him to win
San Antonio for Texas. The rest
of his life is recorded in history.
After losing his family he went
to the padre and for consolation
and was greatly comforted by his
statement, "There is no death.”
His specially designed knife
which still bears his name v
the Iron Mistress that was ever
by his side.
The Wednesday Club is indebted
to Miss Nora Hayes and Mrs.
Mable Brooking for arranging this
fine program.
Dainty cookies and spiced tea
were served during the social hour,
with Mrs. J. L. Koerber pouring.
Mrs. Charlie McDonough and Mrs.
Koerber were joint hostesses with
Mrs. Nestcr.

On Needed Credits
The Palacios Parent-Teacher As-
sociation met Tuesday at 3 p.m.
in the high school library for the
first time in 1952.
After necessary business was
transacted, the meeting was turned
over to High School Principal Wel-
don Sullivan, who spoke on re-
quirements necessary to graduate
from high school and tc enter col-
lege. Among the points he stressed
was the necessity of paren s, stu-
dents and teachers to begin pan-
ning together when a student be
comes a freshman as to what
courses to take to prepare for
whatever the student plans to do
upon graduation from high school.
After the meeting Mrs. O. A.

Telephone service is still a bargain—even at the
increased rates which are being asked.
Prices of all commodities have increased many
times—the cost of living has {one up
rapidly.
Salaries, wages, and material costs have Iso ad-
vanced sharply—the cost of doir, j busi-
ness is at an all-time high.
The Telephone Company must have rates o meet
these increased costs.
