Six years after first try, Helms leaves with cabin

After more than 44 hours, Mike Helms was the last man standing in the Hands on a House com-
petition where 23 contestants tried to outlast each other for the top prize of a Texas cabin.

Last Sunday wasn’t the
first time for Mike Helms to
undergoing the challenges of
Hands on a House, or the first
time he’s made it to the final
two contestants. The father of
seven competed in the 2007
Hands on a House competition
when he made it to the final
two but left the competition
without the house.
Helms spent six years look-
ing over the houses up for
grabs and decided it was time
to get back in the game when
he saw the house contractor
Johnny Cantwell built.
“Johnny did an awesome job
with the cabin,” Helms said.
“When I saw it I told my wife I
was doing it again.”
While he knew he wanted
the house, Helms didn’t expect
to go up against a close friend,

Brown County Elections Administrator Suzy
Young wants to remind the public that Texas
law now requires photo identification for those
who vote in Texas elections.
A voter will be required to show one of the
following forms of photo identification at the
polling location before the voter will be permit-
ted to cast a vote:
• Texas driver license issued by the Texas
Department of Public Safety (DPS)
• Texas Election Identification Certificate is-
sued by DPS
• Texas personal identification card issued by
DPS

budget, tax rate

Brown County Commissioners will have
public hearings on the county’s proposed $18.2
million budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year and
on a proposed tax rate of 57.43 cents per $100
valuation when they meet at 9 a.m. Monday.
Commissioners will consider adopting the bud-
get and tax rate after the public hearings.
The new budget is $2.8 million larger than
the current budget, with $1.5 million of that
increase coming from tax notes commissioners

braces recovery,” said James
Cox of the Center for Life
Resources.
The Center for Life
Resources held its Second
Annual Recovery Walk and
Picnic Saturday at Coggin
Park, with activities for the
kids and adults.
Family and friends joined
in honoring those celebrat-
ing recovery from addiction,
at the day long event. Rain
clouds looming overhead
couldn’t dampen the spirits,
as participants took the
time to share their personal
experiences, along the path
to recovery. Each explained
their own challenges and
successes, acknowledging
the crucial roles of faith,
family, and friends, in con-
quering their dependences.
