ACM
arleton’s CB Phillips among NIL Draft hopefuls
BY BRAD KEITH
STEPHENVILLE EMPIRE-TRIBUNE
STF.PHF.NYTI IF. — Dashaun Phillips
has been working toward this week-
end since the first time he touched a
football as a young boy.
The Tarleton State senior from
Duncanville is rated as high as the No.
3 cornerback in the NFL Draft accord-
ing to some teams, leading many to
believe he may become the highest-
selected Texan in school history.
Round one of the draft was Thurs-
day night, rounds two and three are
today and rounds four through seven -
when Phillips is most likely to be taken
off the board - are Saturday.
“It’s a huge weekend for Dashaun
and a huge weekend for our football
program,” said Tarleton head coach
Cary Fowler. “Not many Division II
teams have ever been able to say they
have a player among the top three
prospects at their position.”
Funny thing is, according to Fowler,
the two-time All-American doesn’t care
if he’s drafted. He just wants a chance
in a training
camp.
“Dashaun
has traveled
all around
the country
working out for
teams, attend-
ing regional
combines,
all that, and
he’s been low
key and even
keel through
it all,” Fowler
said. “He’s just working every day to
continue to improve himself, and all
he wants is a shot. He told me, if he
can just get in a camp, he’ll find a way
to earn a spot on a team.”
The website nfldraftscout.com
says Phillips could go in the sixth or
seventh round, and at worst will be a
preferred free agent. But Fowler has
spoken with several teams who led
him to believe Phillips could go higher.
“Who knows where he’ll go or what
those teams are actually thinking,”
said Fowler. “All I know is what they
tell me, and they say they like him
a lot. His pro day numbers put him
among the best in the class athleti-
cally, and like I’ve told every team I’ve
talked too, he’s an even better person
than he is a football player.”
Since Fowler has became head coach
at Tarleton in 2010, three Texans have
gone on to NFL camps. Defensive end
Rufus Johnson was selected in sixth
round last year and spent the season
on the practice squad with the New
Orleans saints. Quarterback Nick
Stephens was with the Tennessee
Titans and Dallas Cowboys during the
2012 and 2013 preseasons and has
resurfaced with the Baltimore Ravens.
Receiver Saalim Hakim was in camp
with the Oakland Raiders in 2012.
“Dashaun is the best of all those
guys. He’s the most talented player
I’ve ever coached and one of the hard-
est workers on top of that,” Fowler
said. “This guy’s going to make an NFL
roster, I’m confident of that.”

Teenager’s low self-esteem drags down boyfriend, too
DEARABBY: I’m 16
and I need help. I have
been in a relationship
with my girlfriend,
“Bailey,” for six months
and things are com-
plicated. She’s very
insecure, and it’s hard
to keep her happy for
any extended period of
time.
I have thought about
breaking up with her
because I want her to
be happy, and the same
goes for me. But then I
think I’d rather be mis-
erable at times and happy
at others and be with her,
than end it and possibly
feel worse.
Please give me some
advice. I love Bailey and I
don’t know what to do. -
LOST IN ARIZONA
DEAR LOST:
Have a talk with
Bailey and tell her
that although you
love her, her inse-
curity and mood
swings make it
difficult. If you
do, it may give
her something to
think about. The
problem with in-
security is it can
eventually drive
a boyfriend -- or
girlfriend - away when it
becomes smothering.
P.S. There is truth to
the saying that you can’t
MAKE someone happy;
happiness has to come
from within.
DEAR ABBY: My boy-
friend and I are in our
40s and have been living
together for several years.
The house we live in is in
his name only, and he pays
the mortgage.
I own a townhouse I
bought before I met him,
and I make the payments
on it. People often ask us
why I don’t sell it. I usu-
ally give some excuse, but
the real reason is, when
he drafted his will, he left
everything to his mother
- at her insistence.
He seems to think it’s too
much trouble and expen-
sive to change his will to
include me. I want to be
sure I have a place to live,
so I have kept my town-
house.
Needless to say, our
views on this situation dif-
fer. What’s your opinion?
- HEDGING MY BETS IN
TEXAS
DEAR HEDGING: I think
you are behaving ratio-
nally, because it should be
quite clear that your boy-
friend wants his assets to
go to his mother - not you
- in the event of his death.
I hope you have your
townhouse rented and
are saving the income, be-
cause you may need the
money later. That way, if
your boyfriend suddenly
keels over or the romance
sours, you won’t be left
with nothing but memo-
ries.
DEAR ABBY
