COLLEGE STATION —
Midway through the second
half of their second game in
the championship bracket of
the 7-on-7 Division II state
tournament, the Brownwood
Lions were in possession
of a double-digit advantage
and appeared poised to ad-
vance to the round of eight.
The Lions failed to score
on their final two drives,
however, which set the stage
for the Liberty Panthers to
rally for a 28-27 victory that
ended Brownwood’s bid for
a second 7-on-7 state cham-
pionship in three summers.
Clinging to a 27-22 lead
with five minutes remain-
ing, the Lions advanced into
goal-to-go territory before
four consecutive incomple-
tions — the longest such
drought of the entire tour-
nament — turned the ball
back over to Liberty.
The Panthers seized a
28-27 advantage with just
under two minutes remain-
ing, but the Lions still had
plenty of time to advance
the 45 yards needed to
reach the end zone and
claim a last-second win.
After two straight comple-
tions to open the drive, the
Lions committed their only
turnover of the tournament,
which ended their stay in
College Station.
“If you think about where
we started back in the
spring with a new offense,
I’m really proud of what
these kids accomplished,”
said Lions first-year of-
fensive coordinator Bryan
Clark. “It’s nice to see how
far they’ve come and to be
able to function and call
plays on their own. We’re
still not where we want to
be, but we’ve made some
huge strides. To go 4-1
against some really good
competition says a lot about
these kids.”
For the second straight
day, Chris Keesee took every
snap at quarterback as he
finished 55 of 72 with nine
touchdowns and one inter-
ception. The Lions scored on
nine of 13 offensive pos-
sessions, but two straight
drives without points at the
end of the Liberty contest
proved to be their undoing.
Also for the second con-
secutive day, Matt McCrane
finished with a team-high
16 receptions for the Lions,
including four touchdowns.
Cooper Howey chipped in
12 catches and three scores,
while Braxton Kilgo also
finished with a dozen recep-
tions. Bryce Vickers hauled
in eight receptions, includ-
ing a touchdown, while
Kaimon Ontiveros caught
four passes. Kyle Steele
chipped in two receptions
and reached the end zone
once, while Elijah Salazar
also caught a pass.
“We weren’t flashy and
we weren’t scoring 30 or
40 points a game, but we
found a way to get it done,”
Clark said. “We ran more of
a slow pace, but the bottom
line is we kept scoring and
the defense got stops when
we needed to. The offense
was pretty efficient with one
turnover in five games, so
that’s pretty solid.”
Trailing 16-13, the Lions
scored on their final drive
of the first half — a scoring
toss from Keesee to Vickers
— and the first drive of the
second half — on a Steele
touchdown reception from
Keesee. Liberty missed out
on touchdowns on both of
those opportunities to fall in
a 27-16 hole.
In the opening victory over
Nevada Community, the Li-
ons turned a 14-12 halftime
edge into a 19-point tri-
umph. Keesee connected on
scoring tosses with McCrane
twice and Howey once,
while the defense pitched
a shutout over the final 20
minutes.
Also defensively in Fri-
day’s first game, the Lions
allowed touchdowns on
just two of eight posses-
sions while Mack Monsen
recorded Brownwood’s fifth
interception in four games.
Liberty was better able to
solve the Lion defense in
the second game, reaching
the end zone on four of six
drives.
Celina defeated Graham,
34-28, in the Division II
championship game, while
Fort Worth All Saints —
which hosts Brownwood
in the season opener on
Aug. 31 — fell to Princeton,
33-27, in the consolation
championship game.
Preseason practice for
Brownwood begins Aug. 6,
and Clark feels the Lions’
offensive potential is much
more promising based on
the development he’s seen
during 7-on-7.
“We said all along that
we’re going to run the foot-
ball this year, so we were
just working on our weak-
ness to see how much better
we’ve gotten,” Clark said.
“We’ve got an opportunity to
be a very balanced offense
which gives us an opportu-
nity to be very good.”
