Many Brown County Youth Fairs have passed since
Patricia Becktold began helping with the production of the
rabbit shows.
For 26 years, half of those as the rabbit superintendent,
Becktold has guided, educated and assisted Brown County
youth with their show rabbits — with the help of Robert,
her husband of 38 years.
Patricia, originally from Clyde, met Robert while both
were working for J.R.B. and the couple moved to Brown
County shortly thereafter.
On Saturday, with additional help from sons Michael
and David, the Becktolds were already setting up the ta-
bles and cages, in preparation for the arrival of more than
100 rabbits on Wed. Jan 8. The process went smoothly,
without much direction. They all knew what had to be
done and each took on a task. Practice, obviously, does
make perfect.
Rabbits have been a family affair for the Becktolds since
Michael, the eldest son, first became interested in showing
them while in the third grade. There was no easing into
rabbits, either. In short time, the family was making 18
shows a year and Michael was determined to learn every-
thing he could about rabbits.
“In 1991 or 1992, Michael won a national championship
with one of his does,” Patricia said.
Michael is now 35 and David 32, but their growing up
didn’t hamper the Becktold’s passion for show rabbits.
“At one time, we had 200 rabbits at home,” she said.
Patricia Becktold has helped many other youth, over the
years, and doesn’t show signs of slowing down now.
“We have the 4H Rabbit Club, holding meetings every
third Tuesday, from September to January, at the exten-
sion office,” she said. “We take kids to the major shows,
where they get to meet the breeders, buy rabbits and learn
what it takes to have a good rabbit.”
Each year, the Youth Fair takes a tremendous amount of
work from dozens of volunteers, like the Becktolds.
“I love the kids and I love the rabbits,” she said, “When
the kids say thank-you, it makes it all worthwhile.”
Beyond the preparation, including working to obtain
new equipment for the rabbit show, Patricia will arrive at
the fair barns around 7 a.m. Wednesday and will not leave
until around midnight.
“I’ll come every day, as long as there are rabbits here,
making sure the kids are feeding and watering them, like
they should,” she said.
The Becktolds work with many of the youngest Youth
Fair exhibitors, since the rabbits are a popular entry into
the process.

We did what we had to do to make it work

BROWNWOOD BULLETIN

If the urge for a burger strikes while you’re in Early or
Brownwood, Jerry and Deborah Shepherd have got you
covered.
This weeks Business Spotlight is a two-fer, featuring
Jerry’s Burgers and Shakes in Early and the Triple T Grill
in Brownwood.
The Shepherds have been married 28 years and for 23
of those they have been working together in the restau-
rant business. For a brief period, the couple moved to the
DFW area, while Jerry was working for Kroger.
“We didn’t like that very much, so we decided to move
back to Brownwood and open a small grocery store,” he
said.
In 1990, they opened Jerry’s Stop and Shop on the
Brady Highway.
“We had groceries and a small deli, with 12 seats,”
Deborah said. Jerry added. “We had one Fry Daddy.”
Gradually, the deli grew and surpassed the grocery
sales, so the Shepherds replaced all of the shelves with
seating.
“We did what we had to do to make it work,” Deborah
said. “The 3M and Kohler employees were good to us, so
we even delivered to them.”
