Early jazz band to
perform in Austin
BY STEVE NASH
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
Steve, nash @ brownwoodbu lletin.com
Early High School’s Jazz Band will perform in the rotunda
of the Texas State Capitol in Austin at noon on May 1, band
director Jason Jones said Monday.
Jones said he arranged the performance through State
Rep. Jim Keffer’s office.
“It’s going to be cool — we’ll get down there and represent
Early High School,” Jones said.
Also Monday, Jones said an article in Saturday’s Bulletin
about the Early band’s Sweepstakes award in UIL band con-
test this year contained an incorrect detail. Jones said the
2013 Sweepstakes marks the first time since 1980 an Early
band has won Sweepstakes in two consecutive years.
Jones also said the Early band is preparing for its spring
concert at 3 p.m. May 19 in the high school gym.

SPECIAL TO THE BULLETIN
news@brownwoodbulletin.com
A team from Early El-
ementary competed in the
State Robotics competition
this past weekend in Deer
Par, placing 34th out of 61
teams overall in the fourth
through eighth grades.
The Robo Turtles quali-
fied as a wild card team due
to their score at the area
competition in San Angelo in
January.
Four fifth-grade students
— Brent Grooms, Kiah
Laborn, Nathan Mitchell and
Timothy Smithson — com-
prise the team.
The challenge this year
was called Molecule Mania.
The team had to program
their robot to complete
tasks and earn points for the
team.
The Robo Turtles created
their own program as well
as built their robot using
LEGO parts. They have been
working on the program
since September and have
competed in three competi-
tions leading up to the state
tournament.
