Bundled up against cold, blustery7 weather
and holding signs that proclaimed “Save our
pool, save our lives,” about two dozen mem-
bers of the Brownwood Regional Rehab and
Fitness Zone gathered Wednesday morning at
Memorial Park with a message: don’t deprive
them of the heated therapeutic waters of the
fitness zone’s pool.
Ages of those at the demonstration ranged
from 60-year-old Sammie Courington, the
former Brownwood High School tennis coach,
to 90-year-old Inez Lack. Many, including
Courington, told similar stories: the pool gives
them relief for arthritis and other ailments
including sore joints and lack of mobility, and
some said the healing, buoyant waters are the
only environment in which they can exercise.

Brookshire’s Relay team raises

When employees from
Brookshire’s decided to start
a team for this year’s Relay
For Life of Brown County,
they set a goal of selling
1,000 cupcake stars by the
end of March. Within three
days, the team sold 478
cupcake stars.
“I’m so amazed and
excited to have Brookshire’s
join us in this venture and I
can’t believe how wonderful
our community is to give $1
when they buy groceries,”
event chair Tammy Robinson
said. “I was so happy the
day I was buying groceries
there and they asked me if I
wanted to donate $1 to Relay
For Life! I had my Relay ball
cap on that day and I was
grinning from ear to ear
when they asked me. I love
this town.”
By March 22, the team
reached its goal of 1,000
and set a new goal of sell-
ing 2,000 cupcake stars
by the end of April — a

Ninety-day challenge
inspires weight loss
BY AMANDA ASHBY
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
amanda.ashby@brownwoodbulletin.com
It can be incredibly difficult to get into
shape on your own. Studies show that it is
easier for people to stick to a healthy-living
plan or a weight-loss plan if they do so in a
group.
In Brown County late in 2012, a challenge
was issued and 10 groups totally 90 partici-
pants answered it. The 90-day challenge was a
friendly competition of sorts in which groups
competed to see who could lose the most
weight and inches from January 1 to April 6.
Teams were devised by several methods,
one was the team was pre-formed or already
put together before registration. Another way
was the trainers at TK Fitness and project fa-
cilitator Cookie Gamblin put teams together.

BY AMANDA LEIJA
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
amanda.leija@brownwoodbulletin.com
Residents looking to build their skills in
acrylic painting can now take a weekly class
offered by the Brownwood Art Association.
BAA member Jonathan Ceniceros will
teach the weekly class on “Acrylic for Begin-
ners” starting today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at
the BAA Art Center, located at 215 Fisk.
Ceniceros, an art communications gradu-
ate from Howard Payne University, has
been an active member of the BAA and has
participated in several local shows including
the Comanche Pow Wow, Coleman Fiesta de
la Paloma and the Stars of Texas Juried Art
Show.
“This is a great opportunity to discover
your artistic desires and your hidden talents
in a non-threatening atmosphere with
others to motivate and give you encourage-
ment,” Kathryn Jones said.
The class will be $10 session for anyone
15-years-old and older and does not include
supplies.
“When purchasing paints it is better to
buy fewer or smaller tubes of paint that are
better quality,” Jones said.

GIAN r banquet
BY AMANDA ASHBY
BROWNWOOD BULLETIN
amanda.ashby@brownwoodbulletin.com
Members of the Brown-
wood Area Chamber of
Commerce are gearing
up for one of the biggest
events of the year, the
Brownwood Area Cham-
ber of Commerce Pres-
ents a “GIANT” Annual
Banquet.
The banquet will begin
at 6 p.m. at the Brown-
wood Coliseum. The
itinerary for the evening
states that the reception
will begin at 6:30 p.m., the
dinner will begin at 7 p.m.
and the awards will follow
at 7:30 p.m.
The theme derives from
the 1956 film “GIANT”
which stared then super-
stars Elizabeth Taylor,
Rock Hudson and James
Dean. The film is the epic
tale of a Texas rancher
who falls in love with a
horse owner’s daughter
while in Maryland. They
are married immediately
and return to Texas. The
story spans across two
generations and follows
their family and its rivalry
with cowboy and later oil
baron, Jett Rink, played
by Dean.
This theme is ideal for
this year’s annual banquet
as the red carpet theme
from the Chamber’s
spring business showcase
held on April 4 will be
combined with the cur-
rent West Texas oil boom
and the preparation for
the impact of the Cline
