Humfeld surprised by 'Woman of the Year' award
by AMANDA AsHBY
YJ STAFF WRITER
Dr. Nancy Jo Humfeld, chair of the
Department of Communication and
Theatre and director of theatre, received
a big surprise on April 14.
The Brownwood Chamber of
Commerce honored Humfeld with the
"Woman of the Year" award in front of
her friends and family.
She was taken completely by surprise
and never suspected she was receiving
the award until her name was called.
When she saw members of the Howard
Payne faculty and members from her
church present at the awards banquet
held in Brownwood Coliseum, Humfeld
thought, "How nice that they were
involved in the community."
But she never dreamed that they were
there for her.
The "Woman of the Year" award is
given based on nominations to a woman
who, as the Brownwood chamber of
commerce states, "has excelled in their
community service. A single recipient ...
who has made a significant contribution
to the quality of life in our community.
She may be from any area of life: arts,
business, civic, education, home and
family, health, media, historic and from
a public, private or governmental group.
She may work behind the scenes ormay be a person who is
in the public eye. These
individuals may be cited
for an individual accom-
plishment, or for a series
of accomplishments over
a longer period of time
- particularly within the
past year."
Humfeld has long
been involved in the
effort to bring the arts
to Brown County. She
has been a force behind
the Lyric Theatre, served
on the Arts Council for
eight years, and has
brought numerous plays
to HPU's stage, as well
as worked with some of
the local high schools on
their plays and musicals.
"It never occurred to
me that I would receive
an award. I just do my job Dr. Nancy J
... I always felt I should faculty mem
do more," Humfeld said. "Woman of
The Chamber of Chamber of
Commerce obviously
felt that she was doing more than her
share. They only give this award to peo-
ple who are working hard to improve
the quality of life to this region.

receiving the award, Humfeld said she
was, "grateful and tickled ... and still
stunned. So, so very honored and so
thrilled that so many friends were there.
I don't know when I've been so delight-
ed and thrilled."Tony Aaron: from page

that he was able to bring real world
experience into the classroom.
Due to his time in the military, in
addition to criminal justice classes
Aaron took prior to his time at
HPU, he had 20 credits when he
enrolled in 2008.
He said his family has been very
supportive, even though his sched-
ule caused him to miss a few sport-
ing events. The sheriff's office has
been supportive as well and has
been flexible with his schedule to
accommodate for classes.
During Wednesday's Academic
Awards Convocation, Aaron
was recognized twice: as the
Outstanding Nontraditional
Student and for the Honor Award
in Criminal Justice.1
Aaron has lived around the
Brownwood area for most of his
life. He joined the Army National
Reserve in 1993 and left in 1999.
He never was on active duty due
to the fact that he joined after
Desert Storm and left before the
September 11, 2001, attacks.
He began his career in law
enforcement at the Comanche
County Sheriff's Department
in 1997. Shortly, he moved to
the Brown County Sheriff's
Department in 1998. He has been
in narcotics for the majority of his
time in law enforcement.
After graduation, Aaron hopes
to eventually attend Sam Houston
State University. His goal is to
receive a master's degree in public
