Ammons, Paul honored at HPU Woman's Club Yellow Rose luncheon

Carlee Ammons, a sophomore at Howard
Payne, recently was awarded the Yellow
Rose Scholarship for the 2011-12 aca-
demic year during the seventh annual HPU
Woman's Club Yellow Rose Scholarship
Luncheon.
The HPU Woman's Club also honored
Brownwood native Bernice Porter as the
recipient of the HPU Yellow Rose Award.
The annual luncheon was held in the
Mabee University Center. Award-winning
standup comic, television hostess and
author Chonda Pierce was the guest speaker
for the group of HPU faculty and staff and
community women.
The Yellow Rose Scholarship is pre-
sented annually to a female sophomore at
HPU who maintains at least a 3.0 grade
point average, participates in extracurricu-
lar activities, and exhibits leadership quali-
ties representative of Christian values.
Ammons, a communications major,
recently was voted as the HPU Student
Body President for the 2011-12 school year.
She also is a member of the honor societyGamma Beta Phi, and is currently the orga-
nization's representative in HPU's Student
Government Association. She is also a
member of Student Speaker Bureau, HPU's
nationally recognized speech and debate
team; the varsity volleyball team; and the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also
serves as a leader on the Baptist Student
Ministry leadership team.
The Yellow Rose Award is presented
each year to a woman in recognition of her
exemplary leadership, Christian values and
demonstrated support of HPU.
Paul, a Howard Payne graduate, has
been a charter member and president of
Brownwood Hospital Auxiliary, and
has served at the information desk of
Brownwood Regional Medical Center. She
has been a member of the Woman's Club
of Brownwood and a trustee for the Baptist
Memorial Center in San Angelo. A member
of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, Paul
has been a longtime Sunday school teacher
for all ages. She was named First Lady of
Brown County by the Heart of Texas Girl

Howard Payne junior Chandler Raine was the recipient
of the Top Individual Oralist for the second consecutive
year, and the team of Jake Aschmutat and Adam Hardy
was named the Top Team by the Texas Undergraduate
Moot Court Association in March.
In the top team category, HPU had two out of the top
five teams. In addition to HPU taking first place, Raine
and his partner, Angela Haney, took fifth place.
HPU students were also ranked four of the top five
individual speakers, with Raine taking first place, senior
Robert Davis second, Hardy third and Aschmutat fifth.
Additional HPU teams competing this year were
Bethany Peterson and Bethany Berry, along with Elizabeth
Davidson and Elizabeth Rogers.
The HPU Moot Court is under the direction of Mandy
Locker, J.D., assistant professor of criminal justice. Moot
Court is simulation of the appeals court process before the
U.S. Supreme Court.
The Gary D. Elliston Moot Court Endowment Fund was
established in 2006 to provide funding for the HPU Moot
Court program. The endowment covers costs incurred by
the organization such as travel, lodging, entry fees, and
organizational dues to the Texas Undergraduate Moot
