Ag Adventure Day is an
April tradition at Barbers
Hill Primary School.
Since 1990, hundreds of
high school FFA members
have coordinated and pro-
duced educational events
that give first graders an up
close experience with the
world of agriculture.
This year’s event took
place April 16 at Barbers
Hill High School.
“Ag Adventure Day
teaches FFA members how
to coordinate a large-scale
event,” said FFA officer
Cameron Comeaux. “It al-
lows young children the op-
portunity to learn first-hand
about agriculture.”
High School FFA stu-
dents direct the entire event
under the guidance of Ag
teachers Ralph and Mary
Wilson, and thanks to a
grant by ExxonMobil.
During the event, FFA
students run nearly a doz-
en stations that teach farm
facts, demonstrate animal
skills, and put kids in the
seat of a tractor and a sad-
dle - most for the first time
ever.
Local game warden Da-
vid Vannoy volunteers his
time to educate FFA mem-
bers and primary students
on the importance of boat
safety and activities avail-
able on the waters of Cham-
bers County.
Local Agriculture Exten-
sion Agent Tyler Fitzger-
ald teaches students about
Chambers County wildlife
and fish.
Other stations for young
students include a petting
zoo of farm animals, horse-
back riding, sheep shearing,
the world of dairy products.
“Over 350 first grade stu-
dents attend the day and go
home with smiles on their
faces,” said Barbers Hill
FFA President Tyler Davis.
“The time spent coordinat-
ing Ag Adventure Day for
months ahead is well worth
it when you see how much
fun the kids have.”
Senior and Ag Adven-
ture Day Chairman Brittney
Boyd said, “We are excited
each year to put this day on
for our little Eagles. Thanks
to ExxonMobil for making
this possible.”
