County To Pay
Clorkt Salary
For Co. Attorney
The salary of an extra clerk
in the office of the County
Attorney Richard Hatch will be
paid in full by the county on the
request of Hatch to the com-
missioners court Thursday.
The clerk has been working
under the NYC program with
the federal government paying
her salary except for one day
each week. The county had
assumed the one-day per week
payment several weeks ago on
the recommendation of the
county attorney, who said her
work load had been increased
because of hot check cnarges
filed until he needed her on the
job for a longer period per
week than the NYC salary
warranted
He told the court that he had
been notified that there will be
no further NYC funds available
for a few months The court
agreed to pay the clerk the
regular beginner's salary of
$300 per month until NYC funds
are again available
Commissioner Pat Kindle
asked why the commissioners
who have had to use skeleton
crews because of shortage of
funds could not have extra help
if the county offices were
getting extra help. Hatch again
explained that the ho' check
filings warranted his having a
fuli time clerk to do that work.
Mrs. Velma Sherman, county
clerk, said in reply to Kindle s
query, ‘I suppose my office is
included, and I need extra help
to carry the full load of hot
cheek cases that are coming
through the clerk's office " She
then added, “Merchants are
accepting checks too readily
and then are making the
county a collecting agency
when those checks prove to be
not good."
The clerk in the county at-
torney’s office has been
working a 30-hour week since
December 1970 until the extra
day was added at county ex-
pense a few weeks ago. Hatch’s
request for a 40-hour week for
the clerk was approved along
with the beginner’s salary for
the job.
