VOLUME 24, NUMBER 15
THURSDAY, JULY 11,2013
PO BOX 448, VALLEY MILLS, TX. 76689
Police serve felony
warrant for drugs
On Thursday, July 4, Valley Mills
Police Chief Ricky Ray served a
felony warrant on a drug charge to
Brian Sheffield.
The warrant, issued out of Waco,
was for possession of what was
thought to be methamphetamines.
"We made entry into the house and
Sheffield was hiding behind a bed,"
Chief Ray said. "He came up quickly,
as if to run and he had four officers
pointing guns at him. Cpl. Randy
Threlkeld transported him to Bosque
County jail."
On Friday, July 5 at 2:30 a.m. police
got a call from a person at 801 Avenue
A about a possible disturbance.
The complainant said a suspect was
calling and threatening to come to that
residence.
Another call indicated that the
suspect was at the house and when
officers arrived, they arrested a 48-
year-old male for public intoxication.
On Monday, July 8, at 3 p.m. Chief
Ray was called to 401 Seventh Street
to investigate a possible domestic/
civil matter over children.
Chief Ray settled that by making
the two parties agree on matters.
At 5:15 p.m. that same day, a side-
swipe accident occurred in the 14000
block of FM 317. This location is in
the city limits, but has a highway
speed limit, Chief Ray said.
The complainant was southbound
and had a broken mirror, broken
driver's side window and cuts to the
left arm.
The violator fled north and was last
seen on FM 317 over the viaduct. The
only description is the vehicle was
possibly a red mid-sized SUV. It
should have minor damage to the
driver's side of the vehicle.

National Anthem
July 4 in Valley Mills
The Bosque Valley Heritage Society hosted a July 4 celebration
in Valley Mills that began with a parade that was bigger than any
in recent history. The program in the park honored veterans of
the recent military conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Mayor Jerry
Pierce welcomed the crowd and Sarah Smajstrala sang the
National Anthem after Boy Scout Troop 382 raised the flag and
the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Claude Burns gave the
invocation and the winners of the bicycle contest were named.
They were Macie Speer in first place, Drew Speer in second place
and Makayla Thomson in third place. The float winners were the
City of Clifton in first place, Valley Mills 8 and Under Softball
Girls in second and the Wild West Gunfighters' Club in third
place. Katie Hargrove was named Little Miss Firecracker and
Rylan Barnes was named Little Mr. Fourth of July. The Bosque
Valley Heritage Society served smoked brisket lunches that
Kenny Pierce cooked and the park was filled with vendors selling
hair accessories, soaps, wood and marble games and other itesm.
The Golden Starz Dance Team had a dunking booth and a vendor's
booth and managed the bounce house for children. River's Edge
band, Rushin Steele and Gypsy Belle provided music for the day
and a Wild West Show held gunfights during the day. The
Museum in the Depot was open for tours and an Art Expo was
open in City Council Chambers. On Friday, the First Annual Bash
on the Bosque dance and concert was held at Boy Scout Park.
The event was sponsored by the Valley Mills Volunteer Fire
Department and Gypsy Belle, Ethan Geiger, Casey Kelley and
the Chris Low Band performed. That event was co-sponsored by
Helmets of Love and the FFA Booster Club.

Council OKs purchase
of voting equipment
By DONNA VETETO
The Valley Mills City Council met
Tuesday, July 2 and approved the
purchase of an AutoMARK voter
assist terminal and four ballot boxes
because Bosque County will no
longer run city elections.
"The state requires us to have a
ballot box," City Administrator Bill
Lancaster said. "New ones will cost
$4,200 and the county will sell them
to us for $2,000. The county has put
us on hold until we had a meeting and
these boxes have not been used."
Councilman Curtis Wiethom made
the motion to purchase the ballot
boxes and an AutoMARK voter assist
terminal, councilwoman Donetta
Ferrell seconded and the motion
carried.
At the beginning of the meeting,
Alverta Slaughter gave the
invocation.
Valley Mills Fire Chief Brady
Schuetz gave council the monthly fire
report and updated them on plans for
the Bash on the Bosque Dance to be
held Friday, July 5.
"Wesley (Lewis) and Chief Ray
have a game plan for Lriday," Schuetz
said. "We have power in the Boy
Scout Park."
In his Mayor's announcements,
Mayor Jerry Pierce said the Bosque
Valley Heritage Society had been
working hard on the July 4 in the Park.
He said there would be a mechanical
bull, a Wild West show, and that there
had been trouble with one band, who
had to drop out.
He said that in spite of that, two
more groups had signed on to
entertain at the festivities, a trio of
young ladies from Clifton called
Gypsy Belle and a singer named
Rushin Steele.
"There's a lot going on in the city,"
Mayor Pierce said.
He then asked for volunteer reports
from Helmets of Love and the Eagle
Scout project at Old City Hall.
"We're in the process of painting,"
Kathy Burt of Helmets of Love said.
"We lack the big merry-go-round and
will power wash the restrooms."
She said someone would come in
after July 4 to renovate the bathrooms
and thanked Councilman David
Smith for helping with the little
merry-go-round and putting the eagle
spring rider on the spring.
"I want to thank volunteers Jamey
Burt, Brandon Mathews and
Quinnton Pierce," she said. "It's going
quickly and it will be nice."
Boy scout Ryan Hufstedler gave an
update on progress with his Old City
Hall Eagle Scout project.
"I'll start with the east wall that
faces the Lire Department," he said.
"The regular doors are in good shape
and have been primed. The garage
door needs to be sanded, primed and
painted. The edges of the garage door
are rotted at the bottom and I will cut
18 inches off and replace with new
wood."
He said that the top corner over the
garage under the roof was rotted out
and the beam is a support beam that
runs into the ceiling of the edge of
the garage.
"I'm not able to replace it," Ryan
said. "I will patch the area on the
outside as best I can. This needs
closed up to stop the wasps from
entering the building."
"The bottom window sills in back
are rotted out," he said. "There is not
any wood on the inside wall to attach
new wood to as it has rotted out as
well. I will fix the outside window
sills as best I can to stop any water
from getting into the wall."
He said that the green exterior lights
need to be cleaned up and after that,
he would make sure they worked. If
not, he said, he would get them
repaired. He suggested putting energy
efficient bulbs in the fixtures.
"We were able to get the phone
company out to re-tie the phone wires
to make it look better," Ryan said. "He
pointed out what wires were dead and
could be removed."
He also reported that an electrician
had removed the dead wiring and that
one wire coming out of the eaves was
hot but deteriorating.
"We need access to the locked room
in the corner to get to the breaker
box," Ryan said. "This wire goes to
the scale house so at this time the scale
has no electricity."
He also reported a wasp problem
and had Mr. Kettler to spray the
outside of the building as a donation.
"The wasps are coming out of the
attic through rotted boards," Ryan
