VM school board held regular meeting May 16
The Valley Mills Independent
School District Board of Trustees met
in Regular Session on Wednesday,
May 16.
Board Members present were
Charlie Boyd, Michael Sexton, Mike
Jones, Jim Blackford, Bret Hodges,
and Alice West.
Board Member Ben Trammell was
absent.
The meeting was called to order by
President Charlie Boyd.
High School Principal Joe
Crownover recognized the following
students for their participation in the
Regional UIL Academic
Competition:
Ashley Stockman, Christian
Aleman, Suzi Jobe, Amanda
Huffstedler, and Kyle Lanmon. Mr.
Crownover issued each student a free
ice cream, tardy pass, and certificate.
Mr. Robinson then presented gift
certificates to Employees of the
Month: Delma Mann, Darlene Burt,
Deborah Freedman, and Mary Toten.
This group was recognized because
of their outstanding work in the
cafeteria and their service to students
provided on a daily basis and each
also received a gift card and
certificate.
Elementary Principal Gail
Wimberly, recognized Jennifer
Sproles as the Teacher of the Month.
Ms. Sproles is the 2-year-old through
Pre-K teacher. She was given a
certificate and gift card.
Coach Dusty Robinson recognized
Miles Robison and Jake Beebe for
baseball honors along with Coach
Trey Felan. Courtlin Deutschmann,
Abi Jobe, and Sandra Gaona were
recognized for their outstanding
athletic accomplishments.
Harold Ferguson, Emergency
Management Planner for the Heart of
Texas Council of Governments,
presented each Board member with a
TEEN CERT brochure featuring a
quote from Reid Blackford and a
manual for forming TEEN CERT
programs which highlighted quotes
from Rebecca and Krystal Loftin and
Christian Amodio and snapshots of
the Valley Mills ISD TEEN CERT
program.
Robin Lanmon explained the
search and rescue event the students
had recently experience. Nine
students along with Mrs. Lanmon will
be attending the Extreme Youth
Leadership Camp June 25-29 at
Schreiner University in Kerrville.
Seventh Grader Caleb Ratliff will
be working on his Ham Radio
certification this summer.
Dewey Ratliff, Bosque County
Emergency Management
Coordinator, gave further explanation
of the program and praised the
students and the sponsor for their
work as TEEN CERT members and
the value the program has to the
school and to the community.
Mr. Robinson recognized Barbara
Galetka who is a custodian at the high
school as the Employee of the Month
and presented her with a certificate
and gift card.
Mrs. Byrom handed out
Certificates of Election for the
signatures of Board members.
Bret Hodges, Mike Jones and
Tammie Mann-Chrisman then took
the Oath of Office.
Once the new members were
officially seated, the Board
considered Alternative Sources of
Power for the District.
Rick Graff and Eric Graff of Air,
Wind, and Solar from Stephenville,
Texas, gave an informational
presentation regarding alternative
sources of power for the district
including wind and solar options,
savings, and pricing for various
programs.
After a four-minute executive
session, Charlie Boyd was approved
as president. The vote was 6-0 with
Boyd abstaining.
Mike Jones was approved as board
secretary by a 6-0 vote with Jones
abstaining.
Alice West was confirmed as board
vice president by a similar vote.
Gail Wimberly reported that the
After School Daycare program was
going well and averaging the
attendance of 20 students per day. She
is investigating the interest of an
outside party becoming involved with
the daycare program. Mrs. Wimberly
will be surveying parents regarding
this opportunity.
Superintendent Robinson gave an
update on the status of the grant and
told Board members that the contract
is currently at the attorney's office
with the expectation that the District
should have it tomorrow to sign and
send back to SECO. The $540,000
grant will be used to replace 56 air
conditioner units at the high school
The District will refinance the 2002
bonds to save an estimated $52,345.
One hundred thousand dollars in the
I&S account will be used to pay off
some of the existing bonds..
The bonds should start selling the
week of May 21.
Mr. Robinson presented to the
Board the possibility of purchasing a
smaller vehicle that is more fuel
efficient in an attempt to save fuel
expenses and extend the life of the
suburban. For less than $30,000 the
District could purchase a vehicle such
as the Ford Focus, Chevy Cruz, etc.
The principals met recently with
Cody Gibson and established a
priority maintenance list needed at
each campus. The planning also
includes an estimated timeline for
project completion dates throughout
the summer. Work on these projects
has already begun.
The list will be updated as projects
are completed.
There are currently 655 students
enrolled with an Average Daily
Attendance at 96.5 per cent.
The budget has been set on an
enrollment of 592 students, but the
adjusted ADA of 638.5 students will
bring in an extra $120,000 for the
District.
Gail Wimberly stated the upcoming
end of school events including field
trips, award ceremonies, and award
banquets for UIL participants. She
reported the Book Fair did well as did
the One for Books project.
Joe Crownover also reported the
upcoming end of the year events,
awards ceremoni and concerts.
Gaye Lynn Seawright gave a brief
report regarding testing, training, and
progress being made toward learning
more about starting a Foundation for
Valley Mills ISD.
Coach Robinson gave a brief
overview of track issues and
answered questions from Board
members regarding the various
options for its repair.
Bids were taken through the Buy
Board from Texas Sports Builders and
Hellas Construction. Mr. Robinson
and Coach Robinson answered
questions from Board members.
A motion to award the bid on track
repairs to Texas Sports Builders, not
to exceed $163,000, was unanimously
approved.
Three bids were accepted regarding
repairs on the high school parking lot
using the scope of work plan. The
board voted unanimously to award the
bid on the high school parking lot to
D. Palmer Contracting L.L.C. for the
amount of $14,940.There will be an
upcoming review of the efficiency
and effectiveness of the Education
Service Centers by the state Sunset
Commission. If the proposed
resolution passes, it will be sent to the
Commissioner of Education, the State
Board of Education, and state
legislators.
The board unanimously approved
the resolution concerning the
Education Service Centers.
The resolution is similar in scope
regarding the District's approach to
standardized testing. The resolution
recommends not stopping testing, but
cutting back on the number of test
administrations given.

Another resolution concerning
hiring retirees as Independent
Contractors would allow the District
to hire contracted personnel who've
already retired as independent
contractors. Mr. Robinson would
approve the hiring of personnel up to
$50,000. Others would be Board
approved.

the resolution.
The Board went into Executive
Session for about 20 minutes to
discuss personnel. Two items, action
on support staff salaries adn action on
administrative salaries, were not
addressed due to lack of motions.
The board voted unanimously to
accept the resignations of the
following employees of Joe
Crownover, Kevin and Sandy Bryant.

entertainment before the fireworks
Ishow and the Valley Mills Baseball
Association will sell food from their
concession stand.
The Valley Mills Volunteer Fire
Department will have sausage-on-a-
stick, chips and tea for $5. There will
also be sno-cones for sale.
The fireworks show begins at
"dark-thirty." Donations for the
fireworks show are being accepted at
City Hall.
