FRONT SEAT ADVICE
When starting out on cold
mornings, go slew until the oil
tn your wrankcase has had time
to warm out aud spread to all
parts of the motor. Cold weather
makes oil thick, you kuow, aud It
takes time to thin out sufficiently
for lubrication.
If you are driving on Icy pave
ments. without chains it will hell*
to let some of the air out of
your tires, so they will get more
traction, hut be sure to put them
up to the right pressure as soon
as the sklddy stretch has passed
Unless you have one of the new
a ml relatively rare, self adjusting
carburators, l»e sure lo have your
eurburutor adjusted for winter
driving. And be sure you take it
to an expert mechanic, too.
If you arc going to Florida or
Southern California ibis winter
and want your car there, but

u’t exactly welcomed In France
by Wench car makers. Their
real concern, however. Is not com
petition here, but in other coun
tries.
France formerly exported more
than half her cars. Last year
exports were only two-fifths, and
this year the exports are running
only one-tenth, says UharloH Fa
roux, a recognised automobile au-
thority
Since American cars sell well
j here at double their American
factory prices, they have an ad
vantage In many places, though
not In Franco and her colonies.
For years some industrial loud
ers have urged standardisation,
co-operation by makers and re
moval of the 12 per cent de lux*'
tax as measures essential to the
French automobile Industry’s ex
1st once.
Gradually there have come the
'fht *
changes. Three French manufac-
tuvers, Citroen, Renault and Peu-
geot, are credited with three-
(mirths of the output. Four oth-
ers make up a seventh. Sixty

relatively unimportant In volume
of output, although some are val-
uable in maintaining the prestige
of the French car.
With this as a start, it is ar-
gued that French makers have
only to go further in concentrat-
ing factories, cutting overhead
and in standardising materials
aud methods.
Costs It la admitted by automcv
bile engineers, could bo reduced
greatly by general adoption of a
few sizes of bolts aud threads,
formulas of steel and tho concen-
tration of accessory and parts
manufactured In a few factories.
