County Collector Steger came down
from Bay City Tuesday evening, and
was busy from time the train arrived
until late at night making out poll tax
receipts. Wednesdaay morning he went
over to Collegeport to make further
collection of poll raves, making these
visits for the special accommodation of
the voters.
Mr. Fred Powell, who is drilling
wells at Brazoria came down Sunday
evening to visit his family and rela-
tives for a few days. He returned
Wednesday morning and took his
family with him, as he has so much
work to do that lie will have to live
there for some time, and they will

light in scoriating retiring Governor
Tom Carnphel. But governor CainpbeiPs
name is already listed for a high place in
the Texas hall of fame, in due season, as
one of the truly great governors of the
state. Governor Coiyuitt will have
to churn the milk in his cocoanul fre-

mark that will iooic respectable along-
side that of Cov. Campbell’s.*
Don’t forget to pay your poll tav be-

Mr. S. B. Foley and family, consist-
ing of his wife and seven children,
arrived at Palacios Saturday from their
former home at Ronwick, Iowa, and
they are here to stay and help develop
the great coast country. The family
will reside in town for a short time
but Mr. Foley will at once build on
one of his farm3 near the city, and
proceed to improve and develop it.
The quick transition from away below
zero weather, to the warm and balmy
climate of the coast is a great hut
most delightful change to Mr. Foley,
and is one which they very much en-
joy. Mr. Foley and family were ac-
companied by Mr. Marvin Marsh and
laughter, of Fenwick, who have also
come to stay anu make .then home
where the “orange blossoms blow.”
We would most vigorously deny the
charge that people of Palacios are a
bloodthirsty lot of folks in any degree,
and still we are at a loss to account
for the complaisance with which a whole
tent full of them sat through the ex-
cruciating performance of “Jesse
James”
was- the sense
must have felt when Jesse and the
heavy villian got what was coming to
them in the last act. It was suggest-
ed that if the last act had been played
first and Jesse and his “heavy” put
out of the way, the show might have

Francisco, Portland and Seattle, for a

has not taken a vacation for years,
and he is deserving of a very enjoy-
able trip. Since coming to Belle
Fourche four or live years ago he has |
made an enviable record as local agent
for the C. & N. W. railroad. The busi-
ness has increased each year, and with
this and the fact that a greater portion
of this increase has been in local ship-
ments. the work at the depot and
freight house lias been enough to tax
the ability and strength of any man.
Mr Weniana.htm has not only made
good with the patrons of the road, hut
has also convinced the officials of the
company that he is a railroad man

Fourche, S D.
Mr. McClanahan and family arrived at
Palacibs last P'riday, and are enjoying
a visit with Mr. McClanahan’s parents,
Mr. and Mrs. C. H. McClanahan, at
their home. Mr. McClanahan- is more
than delighted with this part of the
coast country, and after his trip to the
west may decide to return here and in-
vest and locate, and which the Beacon
hopes he may do.

Mrs. II. C. Hunt called at her home
and surprised her Saturday evening.
The evening was spent with much
enjoyment by all who came. Music
’ eating was the order of the even-
'd Mrs. D. Hutchinson, of
, who came down with the
ion last Friday, came over
port Tuesday and visited
during the day. Their son
one of the prosperous and esteemed
-itizen.-j of CullegepnU.
Mr. and Mrs. E. I. Parish, of Deca-
tur, Ills., arrived Tuesday of this week
and are enjoying a visit with their good
friend Rev. Bristor and family. They
are enraptured with our city, country
and climate, and will remain the full
limit of their return tickets.
A clearly defined beautiful white
rainbow was visible against the west-
ern horizon Sunday night, caused by
the moon's rays against the heavy fog
which prevailed at the time. The
spectacle was an unusual one, a rain-
bow at night being something that is
of rare occurrence.
An oversight in proof-reading last
week made us say that Collegeport
gave a majority' of 21 for the adoption
of the^ jhl! will no doubt he a bond proposition to j Col iogepoi t teams Satuiday. A boat
is making these prices to piace eieetric
lghts within the means of everybody,
and to encourage their more general
use, especially in the lesidence dis-
trict. The Beacon believes the people
will show their appreciation of the
liberal policy adopted by Mr. Deal in
a large and more general use of this
most convenient and desirable system
of lighting.
Dr. T. L. Scruggs and wife, of Wax-
ahachie, arrived at Palacios about two
weeks ago, and are here to make their
future home. Dr. Scruggs is also a
Baptist minister but is now retired
from active work, but it is still ready
to preach when called upon, although
he has passed his 80th year. Mr. and
Mrs. Scruggs are both active and
earnest church workers, and will be
most valuable acquisitions to the Bap-
tist congregation of the city, as well
to the religious welfare of the city in
as general.
Rev. Dr. Green, the new minister
for the Presbyterian church occupied
his pupit Sunday morning and evening,
and his congregations heard two most
interesting and inspiring discourses.
Dr. Green has returned to his Missouri
home to move his household goods and
bring Mrs. Green to Talacios where
they will make their future home.
Owing to Dr. Green’s absence, there
will probably he no more services at 1
the Presbyterian church until the first
and possibly the second Sunday in
February.
If you are interested in that Wonder
Lamp, and will leave word at the Bea-
con office, we wiil be glad to call at
your home any convenient evening
and show you the lamp, and how it
works, and thus you may knew before
buying just what a superior light it
furnishes, and how little trouble it is
to care for - much lees than any other
iight except electricity. Perhaps you
are from Missouri; so are we, and it
will be a pleasure for us to “show
you.”
Work on the elegant college dormi-
tory is going ahead in a must expedi-
tious manner. Contractor Emmons has
moved his family out near the college,
in order to be convenient to the work,
which will have his personal supervis-
ion ail the time. Large quanities of I
material are being received and de-
livered on the ground; the necessary
sheds and work rooms have been built,
and work on the foundation is nearing
completion.
