THE AIMS OF SMALL TOWNS
The American small town
lies at the parting" of the ways
There are three possible courses
that i can pursue:
1. It can settle back in in-
difference and stagnation eon-
tent to go along just as it has
willing to take whatever prog-
ress comes easily but without
working for tho same. Thero
are thousands of such towns
Some are going ahead a little b-
cause the advance of modern
time null them along. Rut
more are falling behind in tW
race. I
2. It can plan to grow into a I
considerable sized city ropu-
lation may be its one great aim.
It is willing to make any sacri-
fice if it can only grow fast
so that the people who own land
and business propositions can
profit by the advance in valuo
of their holdings.
Such communities are full of
pep and ambition. It is a pleas-
ure to watch their enthusiastic
boosters. No doubt they will
cnt. mnnv crood results along
with tho money they expect to
make. They may get some ro-
sutls that are not so good.
3. Or a town can place it
first stress on quality develop-
ment. It can look askance at
any kind of growth that is not
desirable. It will not be so an-
vimiR in trnl. in a lot of manu
facturing industries that it will
draw m a crowd oi folks tnat
ar'e not sympathetic with its
ideals. But it will try to make
its own products so thoroughly
good and do its work" so effic-
iently that people will naturally
come to it for trading purposes.
It will cultivate beauty and high
education and high civic stan-
dards. Tho No. 3 town will not grow
so fast as the No. 2 town but it
will be the better pace to have
a homo in. And its prosperity
will be very sure and lasting.
Tho people of Bartlott might
well plan for success along that
line.
There are some who voted for
Mrs. Ferguson in the run-off
primary who voted for Dr.
Butte today. However' there
are some who voted for Robert-
son in the run-off primary who
voted the ticket straight in or
der to preserve lifelong recorua
of never having scratched a
Democratic candidate.
At no tinv preceding the
election did Governor Neff in-
dicate whether he would sup-
port the entire Democratic
ticket or whether ho wouia
scratch it. All efforts to hy.vo
him make a public declaration
in favor of the Democratic nom-
inees proved unsuccessful.
Bartlett is just what you
make it. If you don't like the
town you will probably find
that the town doesn't hkc you.
But if you have the right atti-
tude then you will find the
community friendly. It is a
mirror n which you will find a
reflection of yur own disposi-
tion. o
A court has decided that a
pedestrian has the right to
stand his ground but the ques-
tion of who shall foot the bill
for the funeral is yet to be set-
tled. Let us forget politics and go
to work for the best interests
of our town and country.

OUR DOCTOR.
Sleet and a cold Spring win
combine to make it one of the
most disagreeable nights of tho
year. It is near midnight and
the storm has been raging until
the roads resemble long canas

buried under a sen of slush.
Everyone with any respect
for his comfort is woll protected .
between blankets and quilts and
our country doctor after a try-
ing afternoon and evening is"
about ready to call it a day and
retire.
But no. The telephone at
the head of tho bed rings and
Iho doctor wearily reaches for
it knowng full well what it will
mean. John Smith's wife ten
miles from the city has been
critically stricken.
No excuses no postponement
no alibies will do. Without com-

Talk about horosm. public ser
