Alba Suspect
Released on Bond
in Federal Drug,
Weapons Case
Taken from the Tyler
Morning Telegraph
A 52-year-old Alba man, ar-
rested Wednesday after he
allegedly tried to purchase
about 60 pounds of a chemical
used in the manufacture of nar-
cotics, was released on bond
Friday.
U.S. Magistrate Judge
Harry W. McKee released
James Edward Cole on $5,000
unsecured bond and ordered
him to submit to pretrial super-
vision and urinalysis. McKee
was scheduled to conduct a de-
tention hearing for Cole at 1:30
p.m. Friday in Tyler’s federal
courthouse but instead set con-
ditions of release after the
government withdrew its mo-
tion to detain the defendant.
Cole was arrested about 11
a.m. Wednesday at U.S. High-
way 69 and Interstate 20 in
Smith County after he alleged-
ly tried to purchase 60 pounds
of phenylacetic acid, a con-
trolled chemical used in the
manufacture of narcotics, from
a Drug Enforcement Admini-
stration officer working in an
undercover capacity, accord-
ing to information in the case.
He also is charged with us-
ing and carrying a firearm - a
.38-caliber revolver - during
and in relation to a drug traf-
ficking crime.
According to an affidavit
filed by DEA task force officer
Jackie Grier, Cole met with an
undercover DEA officer on
two occasions at the Mc-
Donald’s Restaurant at U.S. 69
and 1-20 in an effort to pur-
chase the precursor chemical,
the most recent occasion being
Wednesday morning
Cole was arrested after he
inspected the chemical in a
room at the Coachlight Inn
Motel, Grier said.
