Today is very sad for
me. I lost a good friend
and an uncle, not
through kinfolk but some
way Aunt Betty and Uncle
Claud became my aunt and
uncle as well as their
nieces and nephews did.
I wont get to go to
Uncle Claud's services,
but went and visited him
for awhile
yesterday,
Monday.
He
iooked so
nice and
peacefully
asleep.
To
all

God bless

YY.I). (Bill) Dollar and his
wife, Jean, arc so happy to be
here, having moved to Rains
County a few years ago from
Ft. Worth after taking an early
retirement. They have found
their little community and all
of Rains County to be so much
more than ever expected! It
was surprising to learn how
‘close’ and friendly a small
town could be. even receiving
a Housewarming Parly from
people they hadn’t known
long, and friendly folks are
always dropping by to give
them fresh vegetables from
their own gardens.
Bill retired from the Elec-
trical Layout Dept, at Bell
Helicopter, and Jean retired as
an Assistant Personnel
Manager at Sears. Since they
were both used to be active,
they wanted to find ways to
s. tay busy while here, so they
tfecided to build their own
Iforne, with the help of Mrs.
Ijbllar's brother-n-law. Al-
though Bill has not had any ex-
perience in carpentry work, he
q«w has plenty so he’s been
able to help out at their local
Church, the Elm Baptist
Ijliurch. The members did aii
l|ie church wiring and some of
IJie carpentry work themselves.
v£nd as for Jean, she stays busy
preparing meals and keeping
the house ready at a moment’s
notice for the traffic of com-
pany that has been staying
overnight quite often, but says
she loves to have them come.
The peace and quite of the
country life, plus the beautiful
pond just outside their back
doorattraets a number of
visitors. It is definitely peaceful
and beautiful there!She also en-
joys doing her needlework and
reading to pass the time.
They've both just recently re-
turned from a 3 'A-week vaca-
tion in Oregon for a family reu-
nion, where they were having
t, w wear a jacket to stay warm
.(can you imagine that right
Ipow?).
The Dollars have two chil-
dren, a daughter and a son, and
d grandchildren, who all love
visit the country. This is
Sean’s best time to be able to
';ook those favorite desserts she
’jnjoys making, and since she’s
Ssually cooking for large fami-
ly get-togethers, she enjoys
'.making a lot of different
'tasserole’ recipes.

Last time I saw Uncle
Claud was in the grocery
store. I saw him almost
every week and would go
and talk to him for
awhile, but this time I
hadn't seen him. He came
overwhere 1 was and said
"Aren't you going to
speak to me?" I told him
I was not only going to
speak to him but that I
was going to hug his
neck. He just smiled and
went over and paid out.
Goodbye Uncle Claud, I
would have bepri at your
services if I could've.
I went to Dr. Marsh
again Monday. It seems
that the arthritis
didn't like me. Here I
go again on some more
and drinking craanberry
juice like it is going
out of being anymore.
I had a real good
old-fashioned visit with
Clara Childers Schmidt
of Dallas. One of her
and Raymon's nieces,
Francis Childers has
been very sick. She
called and told Raymon
and said that she is
still very sick. But
back to "Kell", who most
uf us call Clara. She
has just gotten back
from a visit in Hawaii.
She said it was
beautiful over there.
They rented a car so
they didn't go on the
tours. They went where
and when they wanted to
and stayed as long as
they wanted at each
place. She said she
might get rested in
three months. 1 don't
think Red went. I
imagine he saw all
overseas that he wanted
back in 44 and before.
I was so young when
Raymon and I married
until his sisters seemed
like mine to.
A man (I've forgotten
his name) spent his
morning down here
welding equipment back
together for farmer John
and son. Royce and R.T.
think that the man ran
out of whatever thing
you put iron back
together with and told
them to bring the rest
to his shop. It's
somewhere this side of
Emory on 19 I think. He
said ice water would be
ok for them. How good
can they get, the
stinkers. I like them a
little. They have been
awfully busy since I
felt so out of the way,
kinda.
Royce said Dot said
school got started real
nicely for the first
day. Dot's little four
year old granddaughter
told Dot, she said,
"Granny, you are so
pretty." That age little
grands are ok. We have a
little granddaughter
having a birthday in Ft.
Worth on Sept. 1, but
partying on Sat.
evening. This little
lady, Maddie Harris has
two grandaddy's and 3
great-grandaddy's,
Raymon, Mr. Fred Weeks,
and Mr. Harris. Lucky
little lady. Have a big
day, Maddie and I'll be
thinking of you. I kinda
like your mom and dad,
too.
It's awrull' hut
today, T;jt:sda> and the
webb worms have taken a
toll on the pecan trees.
R.F. has been after them
with some kind of
poison. I think they
striped Joy and Pete and
moved to the next group
of pecans.
Yesterday, Monday,
Aug. 28, it was 93
degrees and today it's
S«pt«Bb«r 7, 1989 Pag* IS supposed to be 104
degrees.
Melting
Moments
1 V* C. flour, sifted
2 Tblspns. cornstarch
Vi C. powdered sugar
1 C. butter (not oleo)
1 Vi C. Angel Flake Coconut
Mix flour, cornstarch and
sugar; blend in butter until a
soft dough is formed (chill if
hard to handle). Shape into
34-inch balls, roll in coconut.
Place 1 Vi-inches apart on a
cookie sheet. Bake at 300° for
20 to 25 minutes, or until light-
ly browned. Makes 3 dozen.
Gooey Cake
1 pkg. of Cake Mix
1 egg
1 Stick margarine
Mix together and put into an
oblong baking dish.
1 box powdered sugar
I 8 oz. pkg. cream cheese
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
nuts, if desired, or
coconut
Pour over cake mixture,
sprinkle with sugar and nuts.
Bake 30 minutes at 350°. The
cream cheese mix will be
gooey when done, slightly
firmer than a cream pie. Mrs.
Dollar uses a chocolate cake
mix with nuts, and a white
cake mix with coconut, for a
variety.
Since she’s no longer close
to town and a near-by grocery
store. Mrs. Dollar has learned
to compromise and keeps this
Dinner Roll recipe on hand for
the unexpected!

I got Raymon to take
me Dunbar so I could see
where Uncle Claud was
buried. The cemetery is
filling up so fast. We
went on to town and got
a few groceries, and of
course cranberry juice,
ha. Got back here and
R.F. went to poisoning
webb worms and I started
reading the Rains County
Leader. Then a very
pretty maroon colored
van drove in the
driveway. In came Raymon
saying "We've got
company." I asked him if
they were stopping in
front they must be
strangers and if they
stop at the side door,
then it's kinfolk. Well,
it was W. and Margie
Boone from over Edgewood
way. We really enjoyed
their visit. They travel
a lot and just got back
from Virginia. Margie
and I worked together.
She could more zippers
on in a minute than I
could in an hour. Last
time we went to her
house to see Dub. He had
a severe heart attack,
but looks real good
also. I asked about our
friend, Mat Wade. They
said he is doing fine I
wish we could go see
that man. He's as jolly
as any man you have ever
met. Maybe we will get
to go see him someday.
You know I'm the
world's worst to grunt
and hurt but all you
have to do is open your
eyes and see someone in
worse shape than I am. I
felt just so sorry for
the elderly, almost
blind man in the
grocer> store. He had
gotten a few things when
I left. I wanted to
offer to help him, but I
was afraid he may not
want anybody to do for
him, as long as he could
do for himself. He was
pushing his buggy very
slow. Bless his heart
whoever he is.
A very pretty navy
blue, new pickup drove
in our driveway
yesterday evening. R.F.
said, "Who could that
be?" Turned out to be
one of our offspring. It
was Ronnie Childers. My
it '"Ts .nff ‘pretty pickup.
We all are proud for you
Ron. I wonder would you
let Pa and Granny take a
drive in that pickup.
Just joking and again
may the good Lord help
you in your future years
and may your future be
bright.
Royce came through and
I asked him how he felt.
He said he would feel
alot better when these
little old heifers quit
calving. I don't know
anything about that
because I stay in the
house.
Today, Friday they
decided to go pick up
shopping. They asked if
I wanted to go. No
thanks, I'll get to
watch my stories.
Usually about midway of
the stories, here they
will come in for lunch
or for just coffee. I
wouldn't take nothing
for them and sure would
be lost without them.
Old Blue trapped a
opossum under the house
and under the room we
were sleeping in and
"yes" Daniel Boone got
up and got that opossum.
He said, "We just as
well stay up, it's 6
o'clock." I didn't want
to get up. I wonder how
a person would feel to
get to sleep until 7

We went to the bank in
Emory. Went through the
drive through window. A
very pretty black-headed
lady helped us. She was
handing money to an
awful lot of senior
folks.
I wj.sh cur parents had
some help back in their
time. No locked doors,
when you went places.
Raymon and Royce were
in Tyler today, Sat.
Still no new pickup. One
of my little
granddaughter's sat down
in a little chair.
Something broke and she
got up and said, "They
just don't make things
like they used to." I
think that's R.F.'s
trouble, I don't think
they make pickup's like
they used to. He just
bates red. We were on
our way to Lufkin one
time and almost there.
He looked over at me and
said, "If 1 knew you had
that red dress on, I
would have stayed at
home, and now bless his
heart, he sure does not
want a red truck. Even
though I still think red
is pretty, don't you
all?
Raymon got quite a lot
of lime put out this
week. He likes another
pasture north of our
house.
That was a good
picture of Garland
Curtis and grandson's.
Today they are little,
wake up and find them
all grown up and us not
very busy. 1 asked
Raymon, "Reckon Garland
just keeps his wagon and
team for the little
one's." Yeah, sure.
Alice Clewis Sissel
said all boys love
something to play with.
Otto had just bought
some longhorn cows when
Alice told me that.
We've got a mama donkey.
It started out, Ricky
Childers bought her then
Fayne needed her in his
pasture. Just had one
horse. He brought the
other two horses back
home from Dallas after
winter came, so Jenny
wasn't needed. I wanted
her so they brought her
up here. Raymon feeds
her at night. She's
always waiting for her
supper. She's as fat as
I am. Some folks think
that donkeys will keep
wolves away from cows. I
hope so. Good night. See
and talk to you again
tomorrow.
It'S Monday, Labor Day
and everybody has gone
home except Joy and
Pete. What an evening
R.F. and I enjoyed
yesterday. Most of our
family down at the lake
and Clara Schmidt and
daughter, Beatrice
Fischer came to visit us
also Raymon, Clara, and
Bea went and visited
their old home place
where they were raised.
Bea wanted to see her
Uncle Raymon's cows.
Clara, me, and R.F. went
to see Fayne's and
Royce's little ranches.
All in all, it was an
enjoyable day. Janette
and Maddie Harris of Ft.
Worth, David and Sherri
Weeks and boys of
Nacogdoches. Should have
seen the 3 year old
catching fish last night
between sundown and
dark. Those fish be
caught might have been 4
inches long, but they
were fish to him.
All is quiet and I'll
say thank-you Lord for
another family
gathering.
Love you all and If
the good Lord's willing
we'll talk again next
week.
