The number of names that have
been submitted for the Dublin
Veterans' Memorial is nearing 1,700
with -the total now expected to be
near 2,000.
Since the initial list was published
in tire Citizen two weeks ago, sever-
al more hundred names have been
submitted as well as the spelling of
some names being corrected.
Deadline for submitting names is
Memorial Day. The large number of
names has resulted in an increase in
the number of black granite stones
used for the memorial and change in
design.
Plans are to have the memorial
completed and dedicated on
Veterans' Day, Nov. 11,2007,
The accompanying drawing is an
artist's concept of what the memori-
al will look like when it is complet-
ed on the Dublin Public Library
grounds. It will be visible from
Highway 6 which is the Korean War
Memorial Highway.
The Memorial will pay special
tribute to Maj. George Davis from
Dublin who was awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor for
his service in the Korean Conflict
He was an air ace and was shot
down in an air battle with Migs. He
also served in World War D as a
fighter pilot
The memorial is to honor all vet-
erans of the military, including the
National Guard, both living and
deceased. That includes those who
served in the Cold War. An effort is
being made to list the individuals by
their era of service but it will not be
entirely possible as some informa-
tion is limited and some served in
more than one conflict
The effort is being spearheaded
by tiie Dublin Post 219 American
Legion with the clearing house for
information being the Dublin
Chamber of Commerce. The idea
was originally that of Chamber
Manager Jeanette Ward but was
quickly adopted as a project of the
American Legioa
Anyone with questions or infor-
mation is asked to contact the
Chamber of Commerce 445-3342.
Paperwork on veterans is being
sought if at all possible to make sure
of the spelling of names.
Work is now underway to
acquire funding for the memorial
which is expected to cost about
$30,000, not counting any statutory
that may be added at a later date.
There will be space on the stones to
add names in the future and the
design is such that stones can be
added if needed in the future. Any
donation should be directed to the
Chamber of Commerce.
Plans are to add names before
each Veterans' Day and have those
additions noted in a special obser-
vance on that day.
MEMORIAL - Riley Gamer Monument Co. of Hamilton has compared the above drawing of what the Dublin Veterans Memorial will
look like. The number of stones has been increased due to the large number of names that have been submitted. Deadline for submitting
names is Memorial Day with the Memorial to be completed and dedicated on Veterans' Day, Nov. 11, 2007. For a list of contributors
helping to fund the Veteran's memorial, see page A3.
