Publication For
Fertilizer Users
Is Available
Home gardners often are
faced with tho problem o& con-
verting fertilizer recommenda-
tion into the proper amounts for
small area use. Extension Soil
Chemist W. F. Bennett has
come to their rescue by prepa-
ring fertilizer conversion tables
for lawns, gardens and flower
beds.
The information is given in
Extension Service publication
L-166 and copies are available
from the offices of local county
extension agents or the Agri-
cultural Information Office.
College Station. Texas.
Bennett points out in the
leaflet that the best garden is a
rich, deep sandy loam with
good drainage, good structure
and water-holding capacity.
But. points out the chemist, the
addition of organic matter, such
as compost or barnyard ma-
nure, ahd commercial fertilize!
work on the city’s municipal
improvements, begun early last
year, is proceeding at a fast
pace In ease you haven't given
it much thought lately, the new
waterwell and distribution
plant out an Woodrow is in
operation and has been fojr
some time..
Folks out Roosevelt drive ex-
tension and on the 418 locip
now have plenty ,o( water pres-
sure. New sewer extensions are
being put in daily and the new
sewer plant itself will be in
use before long.
Silsbee is catching up with
itself—opportunistically readC
with municipal services for still
further expansion of popula-
tion.
Silsbce high school’s second
annual invitational basketball
tournament gets underway to-
day, Thursday, at the high
school gym. Last year the tour-
ney enjoyed an excellent turn-
out from local folks who en-
joyed throe days of topnotch
oaskctball.
This year’s should be no ex-
ception with some of the top
quintets in East Texas appear-
ing on the local hardwood. Thi
first game at 9 a. m. today pits
ever-rugged Buna against Port
Neches.
The Silsbee Tigers appear in
thdir opener at 2:30 this after-
noon against the F.vadale Re-
bels from east of the Neelies.
Understatement of the week
putted from the icy Neches af-
ter that boat wreck Sunday
afternoon; “I was about to push
the panic button!"
Earl “Smokey” Stover, af-
fable county attorney and
lieutenant governor of this dis-
trict of Kiwanis installed new
officers at Port Arthur last
week.
The Port Arthur News tar-
ried quite a write up of the af-
fair which included a short talk
by llu [ieutenant governor
which, apparently was well re
reived bv those present. Stover
has tiern pretty busy with clul|
affairs since being elevated to
the district.post and his calen-
dar for the coming year indi-
cates he will stay busy.
It’s nice to know Silsbce has
such a fine ambassador of good-
will on tbo road.
Wednesday’s “thaw" if it can
he called that, was more than
welcome by this child of sum-
mer. Things were tough all
over, there for a day or two,
when it wouldn’t get warm, no
matter how much you wanted
it to.
Readings of the mercury
around here Sunday morning
were in the teens according to
most, with about 16 to 18 pret-
ty close to taw. It was cold

even better.
Bennett suggests that all gar-
deners fake a soil test to deter-
mine the exact amount of fer-
tilizer needed by the lawn ot
garden. Local raunty agents
can supply information on how
to take a representative soil
sample and give mailing in-
structions.
