idents who ran in the Houston Chevron Marathon/Aramco Half
Marathon on Jan. 15. Melton ran the half marathon in 2:39:21.
This was the 40th anniversary of the marathon. On Jan. 14 the

the same course.
A new exhibit featuring
women’s hats from the 1870’s
to the 1960’s is on display at
the Texana Museum, accord-
ing to docent Mary Sayles.
“During much of this peri-
od hats were considered a
necessary part of a lady’s
ensemble, especially when
dressed for special occa-
sions,” Sayles said.
The exhibit includes selec-
tions worn by Jackson
County women including Mr.
J.W. Bagby, Mrs. Harry
Mauritz, Mrs. W.S.
McCormick, Mrs. George
Natsis, Mrs. Bernice Smith
and Miss Kaapke.

Texana DRT
The Daughters of the
Republic of Texas met on Jan.
10 in the meeting room of the
Chamber of Commerce.
President Roberta Brieden
welcomed the members and
visitors. Helen Long was
introduced as a guest and
member of the Eleanor
Brackenridge Club. Helen
then proceeded to invite the
club to the Trivia Night spon-
sored by the EBC which is to
be held on March 2 in the
County Services Building.
March 2 is very important to
Texas and to all historians and
is known as Texas
Independence Day.
President Brieden said the
Relics, Old Trails and
Historical Sites Committee
was working on historical
trails in the surrounding coun-
ties, including German Trails
out of the port of Galveston,
setting a date for an Historical
marker in Indianola and the
possible placement of an
Historical marker at the
James Baralay Homestead.
Mary Belle Meitzen of Port
Lavaca stated the cemetery
committee was to be com-
mended for the preservation
work at the cemetery at
Indianola and that possibly a
marker would be designated
at a later time at the LaSalle
Monument.
Brenda Gail Novosad
reported that canned goods
and toys for children had been
delivered to the Sheriff of
Jackson County.
Historian Laveme Glover
asked for information for the
history book and member
activities outside of DRT.
The program was given by
Peggy Condron and was on
the famous Texas Ranger,
William Alexander Anderson
Wallace, also known as Big
Foot Wallace. She regaled
about many of his humorous
escapades and told of his
service in the battles occur-
ring during and after 1840.
This man was truly busy as he
was involved with the con-
struction and layout of the
new capital in Austin, the
Battle of Plum Creek, and
fought against Mexican
General Adrian Woll in the
Invasion of Texas in 1842. He
later volunteered for the
Somervell Raid across the
Rio Grande and joined the
Mier Expedition. He sur-
vived the Black Bean execu-
tions that followed the cap-
ture of the Mier participants
and was imprisoned at Perote
Prison, east of Mexico City,
then joined other Texans in
the Mexican-American War
after his release. But he was
not through; for in the 1850’s
he commanded a company of
Texas Rangers fighting
Indians and border bandits on
the new frontier.
