Organizations provide
disaster relief for Japan
We’ve all been shocked
and moved by the images and
stories coming out of Japan
following the recent earth-
quakes, tsunami, and now,
nuclear crisis. Conditions are
deteriorating, and United
Way Worldwide is offering
for donors in our country to
support the Community
Chest of Japan, a part of the
United Way worldwide net-
work.
The Central Community
Chest of Japan, is actively
working to meet the immedi-
ate needs of the people of
Japan and those affected by
the disaster through direct
relief and recovery efforts.
The Central Community
Chest of Japan coordinates
the Japanese Council for
Disaster Relief Project for
Volunteers in collaboration
with a coalition of Japanese
nonprofit organizations.
The Central Community
Chest of Japan is also work-
ing closely with the govern-
ment, local businesses and
other NGOs on the ground
response.

Formosa donates bunker gear
Contributed Photo
Formosa Plastics Corporation donated 15 sets of firefighter bunker gear to the Edna Volunteer
Fire Department. According to Edna Fire Marshal Buster Chase, “the average cost of new
bunker gear is $2,300 per person, so the savings to the department is more than $34,000 if we
were to purchase it brand new.” The firefighting gear will be sent off to a company to have the
Formosa name removed and the gear repaired as needed. From left are James Gasch, president
of the Edna Volunteer Department, Buster Chase, Edna fire marshal, and Ricky Pfuhl, shift
safety coordinator for Formosa Plastics Corporation.

Looking to have a real Dandy Dog day
Ever notice how many
small communities have a
“thing?” You know, a themed
event that brings locals and
visitors in for a day to enjoy
the area and have some good,
clean fun. Ganado has its
Crawfish Festival held in May,
Yoakum has a TomTom
Festival and who can forget
Cuero’s TurkeyFest? Well, the
City of Edna has finally found
its thing - Dandy Dog Dayz.
I’m sure a big smile has just
appeared on the faces of old-
timers as they remember
Sunday nights at Sam’s Dairy
Fresh. The little dairy bar
owned by Sam Powell in the
mid-50s was located right

Now, since I was just an
infant at this time (I just had to
say that), I am relying on
information I received from
Mayor Joe Hermes and
Harrison Stafford.
It seems that Sam served all
kinds of fast food at the Dairy
Fresh - hamburgers, soft serve
ice cream and Dandy Dogs.
According to Mayor Hermes,
a Dandy Dog was Sam’s ver-
sion of a com dog. It was
made with Sam’s own special
mix and was so popular he
actually sold the mix in food
stores.
Cases of the commeal mix
and Dandy Dog sticks were
shipped out of the Edna Post
Office weekly to retailers
around the state. And although
the Dandy Dog never put
Edna on the map, Hermes said
it was a mighty fine tasting
dog and so, shazam, Edna
now has a “thing.”
A committee has been
formed to hold Dandy Dog
Dayz on June 11 in downtown
Edna. Still in the early plan-
ning stages, we hope to make
it a fun, family-oriented day
that not only honors the
Dandy Dog, but also provides
an activity for people to get
together and have a good time.
Brainstorming sessions
have come up with many
theme-oriented ideas - a
Dandy Dog parade down
Main Street of costume-clad
dogs, a Dandy Dog pageant,
and of course, a Dandy Dog
cookoff, but we hope to get
more ideas from the public.
We also need willing volun-
teers, lots of them. It takes a
village to raise a child and a
town to pull off an event like
this. You can contact event
chairmen Justin Bonnot at
782-3331 or Jim Moser at
782-3647 with ideas or to
offer your help.
We also are looking for
more information on the
Dandy Dog, Sam Powell and
his Dairy Freeze. Photos,
memorabilia or just good sto-
ries would certainly add
another dimension to the day.
Local non-profits are
encouraged to pencil in the
date on their calendar. There
will be opportunities for these
groups to sell food, drinks or
other items as a fundraiser.
The first year for anything is
always a test to see what
works and what doesn’t. With
the help and cooperation from
everyone, Dandy Dog Dayz
can very well become a much
looked forward to annual
event.

Save our post office
The Francitas communi-
ty wants for the United
States Postal Service to
hear our options. Federal
law protects us from hav-
ing our post office closed
due to financial reasons.
We want our post office to
remain open. Our sugges-
tions are to reduce the
hours of operations or
days of service. Our last
option would be to keep
the building and deliver
the mail to our boxes in
order for our P.O. boxes to
remain the same.
If the USPS does not lis-
ten to our concerns we
plan to file an emergency
injunction to halt the
USPS from any proceed-
ings to close the Francitas
post office. Federal law
allows a post office to be
shut down only for mainte-
nance problems, lease
expirations or other non-
monetary reasons. A post
office can not be shut
down for financial rea-
sons. Congress would have
to change the law to allow
USPS to close an unprof-
itable post office.
