Swimming and fireworks on the Fourth
These youth found a great way to enjoy a hot summer day at the Edna City Pool. The heat is
on and the Fourth of July will be another scorcher. The Edna City Pool will be open from noon
to 6 p.m. on the Fourth and will be the perfect way to beat the summer heat before going out to
Brackenridge Park to watch fireworks at dusk.

of the respect she gamers as a

From her first day in the

tackle duties head on. She has
earned the respect of judges
and her co-workers.
“Ms. Sklar is one of our

Happy Quantum Ninja Recall Birthday to the Future to me
By Paul Harrison
Idiot Savant
I was born on July 4th at
3:30 in the afternoon. Right
in the middle of the parade in
Belton. This part, I am fairly
sure about.
There’s two versions to the
rest of this story, the parents’
and mine. My story, as I
choose to remember it, goes
that Dad was directing his
band at the Belton parade
when I decide it’s time. Mom
tackles (not literally) a band
mom, whom grabs a kid who
eventually finds Dad in the
mad chaotic mass that is the
parade staging and break
down area. It gets fuzzy from
here, so I’ll fill in as I
remember it, pulling from the
classics and influences of my
youth as needed.
So, Dad in tow, we take
off. I’m the first for my par-
ents, so Dad is wild-eyed and
holding back a panic with
rage and Mom has reached
screamy shrieky mode
already by the time they get
to the hospital. It was proba-
bly much more boring than
that, but this is, literally, my
story after all.
I’m pretty sure I’m bor-
rowing from one of the sib-
lings’ birth stories by now,
but you’ll never prove it. It

being a holiday afternoon
and all, they can’t find any-
one on duty due to the bar-
beque-fueled haze that
descends on Texas mid-
summer. Dad ushers Mom
up to the room they’d been
told at the last doctor’s visit a
few weeks back that the
delivery would be performed
in. He hoists her on the bed
and stomps off to chew on a
nurse, who quickly appears
at Mom’s side, shying away
from his bared fangs and
claws. Like Wolverine with
male pattern baldness.
The nurse insists that we
can’t deliver the baby
because the doctor isn’t here.
Mom’s contractions seem to
beg to differ and the nurse
consults her watch to plan
her next coffee break. Fifteen
minutes.
At some point the doctor
shows up with a dramatic
poof and burst of cheap spe-
cial effect smoke and is
snarled at by Dad before he
goes to chew on a magazine
in the waiting room. We all
do this. Some of us are just
aware of it.
As the theme from Flash
Gordon plays in the back-
ground (quite a feat for a
movie that wouldn’t come
out for five more months,
licensing be damned) I the
baby emerges, slaps the doc-
tor, and then sits down to
write the next great
American novel for the next
30 years.
If only he could still long
enough to finish it.
But not before falling
through a worm hole in time,
causing the extinction of the
dinosaurs with a poorly
thought out allegory and
inspiring the founding of the
United States after a drunken
diatribe with George
Washington, Ben Franklin
and Thomas Payne. Paine?
Franklin? You know what, all
of’m. Yeah. Doc Brown
would be proud. Probably
Doctor Who as well.
So, I personally believe
that there was a car chase
ending with a showdown
with the master criminal
from Die Hard and maybe a
handgun duel with an assault
helicopter in there some-
where before snapping back
to my time Quantum Leap
style, but the parents insist
they’re pretty sure none of
that ever happened.
Whatever. I should know, I
was there. Mostly. I really
want to throw in Raquel
Welch in something interest-
ing, but I haven’t figure out
how to shoehorn her in yet.
So, I’m pretty sure I saw
all that somewhere, so it
must have happened. The
details are interchangeable
anyways. Except for the
space part, that was real but
I’m not supposed to talk
about that part anymore.
Maybe I’ll put Raquel there.
At some point, I’m pretty
sure there was a musical
interlude by the Muppets,
Arnold Schwartzenegger was
revealed as a clone and
almost asphyxiated on Mars’
surface, but still had time to
try to kill, and then defend
John Connor; the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles went
from awesome cartoon to sad
live-action film, music
sucked, then rocked, then
sucked again and at some
point we end up here. Still
working on the next great
American novel. One line at
a time. Every couple of
years. Aging like wine, ripe
like gym socks and tanger-
ines.
So, every year now we
recreate through pantomime
and action movie marathon
the miracle of my birth; and
by blowing up sparkly things
in a field, we relive the thrill
that is me. You do it too, you
just think it’s for other rea-
sons.
So as you heat up the bar-
beque, stock up on fireworks
and drink yourself into a stu-
por, hopefully not all at once,
just remember what’s really
important. Yeah that’s right.
This is my holiday, we just
all celebrate it together.
See? Now wasn’t that ver-
sion much more fun?
