WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES ?
Stephen Wiggins
Recently, Mr. James
Peterson, a denominational
preacher from Houston, Texas,
_who de-
nies the
essential-
ity of wa-
ter bap-
tism in
gospel
obedience
presented
me with
the fol-
lowing ar-
gument: “Since the gospel is
God’s power to save everyone
that believes (Rom. 1:16); and
since the gospel was preached
to Abraham (Gal. 3:8); and
since baptism was not preached
to Abraham it must follow that
baptism is not part of the gospel
today; therefore baptism is un-
essential to one’s salvation.” Of
course, such arguments are eas-
ily answered. Note my reply as
follows.
It is true that the gospel was
preached to Abraham but the
San Augustine Church of Christ
very verse that declares this goes
on to specify what is meant by
such a statement. “And the
scripture foreseeing that God
would justify the Gentiles by
faith, preached the gospel be-
forehand unto Abraham saying,
‘In thee shall all the nations be
blessed’” (Gal. 3:8). God was
anticipating making salvation
potentially available for all men
in Christ. Thus he preached
(conveyed) the gospel (good
news) to Abraham by telling him
that through him and his descen-
dants all of mankind would be
spiritually blessed. This decla-
ration is found in the Old Testa-
ment at Genesis 12:3. In
Galatians 3:26-29, the same
chapter in which Paul calls at-
tention to the gospel being pro-
claimed to Abraham, the reader
is informed exactly how one be-
comes a child of God and thus
belong to Christ as “Abraham’s
seed, heirs according to prom-
ise” whether Jew or Gentile.
This happens when one by faith
puts on Christ by being “bap-
tized into Christ.” Salvation is
in Christ and one is baptized
into Christ.
One other observation: If
baptism in unessential to salva-
tion because such subject was
never proclaimed to Abraham
then one would have to conclude
that the death, burial, and res-
urrection of Christ is not a part
of the gospel either. For such
subject was never preached to
Abraham. What is sauce for the
goose is sauce for the gander.
What proves too much proves
absolutely nothing. These de-
nominational preachers who
make these silly arguments re-
ally show themselves to despise
the word of the Lord. They are
desperate in their attempts to get
around the word of God and de-
ceive not only themselves but
others as well who imbibe their
error. They would do much bet-
ter by humbly submitting to the
divine will and allowing God to
redeem them by his appointed
means so clearly set forth on the
pages of the New Testament.

When a fanner stops plow-
ing his land, stops planting
seeds, cultivating crops, and har-
vesting, he stops being a fanner.
Even though he may live on large
acreage and in a fann house. He
stops being a farmer because he
stopped doing the things which
identified as a
farmer. People
K| * may still all him a

K fanner in NAME
4X^Bonly-
When a Christian stops at-
tending worship services, stops
taking the Lord’s Supper, stops
singing, praying, and giving as
he or she is prospered, and stops
living for the Lord, that indi-
vidual stops being in all practi-
cality a Christian. Simply, this
is because he or she stops doing
those things which identifies one
as a Christian. Can your neigh-
bors and friends identify you as
a Christian by your activities, or
do you cast reflection upon the
name of Christ by the way you
live? Are you a good example or
a bad example? Do you have a
good influence among you
neighbors and friends or do you
have a bad influence?
The Christian must always be
a good example in all things that
pertain to life and godliness. He
or she must always put the Lord
and his Church first, though
many times one must sacrifice
other desires and activities. It
isn’t always easy to take a stand
for truth and righteousness, but
a faithful servant will always
strive to do so.
Once a person becomes a
Christian, he or she will always
be known as a Christian even
though he or she may not be liv-
ing as he or she should live. Just
wearing the name Christian does
not mean one is really a Chris-
tian, nor does just wearing the
name Christian guarantee salva-
tion. Many call themselves
Christians who have never truly
obeyed the Gospel of Christ ac-
cording to His Will. Many have
actually become Christians only
to stop being faithful. They do
not live nor act like Christians
should, therefore, they are
Christian in NAME ONLY.
To be a Christian, on MUST
put the Kingdom of righteous-
ness FIRST (Matt.6:33). One
MUST walk in the light (1 John
1:7-9). One MUST sanctify the
Lord in his or her heart (1
Pet.3:15). One MUST be like
the Samaritan, who showed
mercy, pity, compassion, gentle-
ness and kindness when a priest
and a Levite of the man’s own
nation (the Jews) showed
NONE (Lu. 10:25-37). One
MUST be faithful unto death
(Rev.2:10). And finally, one
MUST do everything else that
identifies one as a Christian and
continually do so ALL the days
of his or tier life_

Romans 12:2, “Do not be
conformed to this world, but be
transformed by the renewing of
your mind.”
The Autobiography of Mar-
tin Luther King Jr. is a book
based on Dr.
King’s
^ speeches and
writings. I want
• to share a por-
N tion of one of
L - his speeches: “I
went to high
^■school on the
L ><^Mother side of
Htown,” he once
said, “to mwBooker T.
Washington High School. I had
to get the bus in what was known
as the Fourth Ward and ride over
to the West Side. In those days,
rigid patterns of segregation ex-
isted on the buses so that Ne-
groes had to sit in the backs of
buses ... I would end up having
to go to the back of the bus with
my body; by every time I got on
that bus, I left my mind up on
the front seat. And I said to my-
self, ‘One of these days, I’m
going to put my body up there
where my mind is. ’” And as we
know, he did. Friend, we need
to understand a very important
point that King points alludes to
- our lives always end up where
our minds are. If our brain thinks
depressed thoughts, dirty
thoughts, or even bitter thoughts,
that is what we will become.
How important to be trans-
formed by the renewing of our
minds. It DOES matter what we
watch, what we read, where we
go, and what we look at.

The Bible says that the eyes
are the gate or window into our
souls. Today, we need to take
every thought captive for Jesus
Christ.
Vance Havner once said,
“Our defeat or victory begins
with what we think; and if we
guard our thoughts, we shall not
have much trouble anywhere
else along the line.” I think that’s
something to think about!

Teachings from the Bible
Dwayne Sowell
What is the qualifications of
a bishop (elder) in The Church?
We know the first elders were
appointed by Holy Spirit So
each congregation must select
them today. The qualifications
are given to us in the Bible.
1 Tim. 2:1-7 “This is a true
saying, If a man desire the of-
fice of a bishop, he desireth a
good work. A bishop then must
be blameless, the husband of one
wife, vigilant, sober, of good be-
havior, given to hospitality, apt
to teach; Not given to wine, no
striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;
but patient, not a brawler, not
covetous; One that rules well his
own house, having his children
in subjection with all gravity; (
for if a man know not how rule
his own house, how shall he take
of the church of God?) Not a
novice, lest being lifted up with
pride he fall into the condemna-
tion of the devil. Moreover he
must have a good report of them
which are without; lest he fall
into reproach and the snare of
the devil.” Please note it said one
wife, not one wife at a time.
The qualification of the dea-
con are as following: 1 Tim. 2:8-
13 “Like wise must the deacons
be grave, not double-tongued,
not given to much wine, not
greedy of filthy lucre; Holding
the mystery of the faith in a pure
conscience. And let these also
first be proved; then let them use
the office of a deacon, be found
blameless. Even so must their
wives be grave, not slanderers,
sober, faithful in all things. Let
the deacons be husbands of one
wife, ruling their own houses
well. For they that have used the
office of deacon well purchase
to themselves a good degree, and
great boldness in the faith which
is in Christ Jesus.”
You will note there is plural
elders and deacons. Never just
one.
In Paul’s address to the
Ephesians elders (men ap-
pointed ) he warns: Acts 20:28-
30 “Take heed therefore unto
yourselves, And to all the flock,
over the which the Holy Ghost
hath made you overseers, to feed
the church of God, which he hath
purchased with his own blood.
For I know this, that after my
departing shall grievous wolves
enter in among you, not sparing
the flock. Also of your own
selves shall men arise, speaking
perverse things, to draw away
disciples after them.” This gives
us the duties of the elders. As for
the deacons; we know they were
to work under the direction of
the elders. The first were or-
dained by the apostles, charged
with the temporal affairs of the
Church. Acts 6:1-4 “And in
those days, when the number of
disciples was multiplied, there
arose a murmuring of the Gre-
cians against the Hebrews, be-
cause their widows were being
neglected in the daily ministra-
tion. Then the twelve (Apostles)
called the multitude of the dis-
ciples to them, and said, It is not
reason that we should leave the
word of God, and serve tables.
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out
among you seven men of honest
report, full of the Holy Ghost
and wisdom (Godly men),
whom we may appoint over this
business. But we will give our-
selves continually to prayer, and
to the ministry of the word.”
