TCEQ approves septage dump application
GONZALES: People in Gonzales County, particulary
residents in the Nixon area, received an unwanted surprise
recently when they were informed that their battle to
stop the dumping of up to 23 million gallons of domestic
septage waste near their homes and schools was lost. The
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
last month approved Gordon Swenson’s application to
dump the septage on a 298-acre section of his property
just outside Nixon. “It’s shocking that the TCEQ would
approve something like this that will most certainly affect
the community in anegative way,” Nixon City Administrator
George Blanch said. “We certainly don’t want this to
happen.” - Gonzales Inquirer
Wharton Public Works director resigns
WHARTON: The city of Wharton is looking for a new
director of its Public Works Dept, following the resignation
of Carter Miska who has held the position for five years.
Miska said he was resigning to pursue other career options.
City Manager Andres Garza, Jr. said the city intends to hire
a full-time replacement. Whether one can be found within
the department is not yet known. Garza said an interim
director may be needed. - Wharton Journal-Spectator
Property values rise in Wharton Co.
WHARTON: Overall property values rose throughout
Wharton County this year, according to the county’s Central
Appraisal District. The city of El Campo’s value went up
about $29-million from about $481.4-million to roughly
$510.8-million. Of that, about $3.6-million came from
new development. The city of Wharton’s value rose from
$379.5-million to $384.4-million that included $ 1.8-million
in new development. East Bernard’s value rose from
$142.7-million to $152.2-million with $1.8-million in new
development. - Wharton Journal-Spectator
Gonzales seeks downtown area improvements
GONZALES: The Gonzales Economic Development
Corporation met with city officials and community business
leaders to gain insight into what the community wants
from its commercial district. Business and city government
officials say they realize the need for an improved public
relations campaign to improve the district’s image. “Don’t
get myopic about downtown,” said city manager Allen
Barnes. “Our downtown looks like a shiny new penny
compared to other downtowns.” Sparking the most debate
was a discussion about facade conditions and vacant
storefronts. Business leaders were mixed on the idea of
creating a historic preservation district where building
maintenance and renovations would become mandatory
per city ordinances. - Gonzales Inquirer
Yoakum ISD seeks nearly $50-mil. bond issue
YOAKUM: The Yoakum ISD is expected to ask voters
to approve a nearly $50-million bond issue in Novem-
ber to fund a Master Facilities Plan. About 85% of the
tax increase will effect the oilfield companies, so it won’t
be a huge tax burden on local citizens. “With the Eagle
Ford Shale bringing in the monies from the gas and oil-
field companies, now is the time to act on this before it’s
too late,” said Yoakum ISD Superintendent Tom Kelley.
“If we don’t get this passed, then all this money will go
to Austin and branched out to other school districts. We
need to take care of Yoakum while we can.” Right now
the YISD tax base is $1.2-billion, but is expected to rise to
near $2-billion next year. - Yoakum Herald Times

said TWC Commissioner
Representing Labor Ronny
Congleton. “That industry
grew by 8,000 jobs in July
alone and has grown by almost
6 percent in the last year.”
Information employment
surged in July with the addition
of 4,800 positions. This
industry has grown by 6,300
jobs over the last year for
an annual growth rate of 3.2
percent. Trade, Transportation,
and Utilities also saw positive
job gains over the month in
Texas, adding 3,200 jobs for
a total of 53,000 jobs added
over the year.
“The private sector
continues to lead the way for
our state’s economy, adding
more than 278,000 jobs over
the last year,” said TWC
Commissioner Representing
Employers Hope Andrade.
“Our 3.1 percent annual growth
rate compares favorably to 2.1
percent for the private sector
nationally.”
