hot topic at MCND
BY TERRY MOSIER

the Commissioners of the
Matagorda County Naviga-

over 50 delegates from the
annual Meeting of Gulf and
Caribbean Fisheries Institute

In her Promotion and De-

week’s monthly meeting of
the MCND Commissioners,
Morris said Gary Graham,
of TAMU Sea Grant brought
the group to the Port Admin
Building for a brief presen-
tation by Morris. After the
presentation, the group was
hosted by Anchor Seafood’s
David Aparicio for a tour of
a Gulf shrimp boat.
Morris reportedly met with
a commercial developer who
is interested in property de-
velopment in the area and
informed Commissioners of
the Port’s ad in the Decem-
ber supply and logistics issue
of Trade & Industry Devel-
opment magazine. She also
gave a report on the Annual
Texas Association of Coun-
ties Investment Conference
she attended on Nov. 8-9 in
Houston.
The US ACE Operations
Manager, Capt. Derek Thorn-
ton and Seth Jones visited the
Port on Nov. 19 and the reps
heard information about the
dredging needs of the Port
and potential sites for a Ben-
eficial Use project.
Morris reported being very
well received, along with
PEDC Executive Director
Mike Strotheide as guest
speakers at the El Campo Ro-
tary Club meeting where over
60 attended. The pair present-
ed a PowerPoint presentation
on the County’s economic
development efforts as well
as information about the Port.
Morris and Strotheide plan
on having a Strategic Mar-
keting Plan ready for the De-
cember MCND Board meet-
ing.

County jobless steady at 9%
BY BRANDI G. WEST
Palacios Beacon
The Texas Workforce
Commission (TWC) released
unemployment data for both
September and October last
Friday resulting with a steady
decline in Matagorda County’s
unemployment.
Matagorda County’s
unemployment rate of
9.0-percent for the month of
Oct. is the lowest monthly
recorded unemployment
rate year to date. Sept.’s
unemployment rate for the
county was at 9.8-percent.
In comparison, the statewide
unemployment rate is down to
6.0-percent in Oct. from the
previous month’s 6.3-percent
both less than the national
unemployment rate.
Nationally the
unemployment rate has
remained at 7.0-percent for
both Sept, and Oct.
“Job growth, sales tax
collections and building
permits all signal that the Texas
economy continues to outpace
the national economy,” said
Texas Comptroller of Public
Accounts Susan Combs earlier
this month.
Out of 11 major Texas
industries seven showed
employment increases with
Leisure and Hospitality
leading the way in Oct. by
adding 7,600jobs and in Sept,
having added 8,900 jobs.
According to the Nov.
edition of the Texas Labor
Market Review, “Total non-
agricultural employment
ended Oct. at an estimated
level of 11,232,700 jobs, an
increase of 267,400 jobs over
the year.”
According to the TWC, with
Sept, data in parenthesis, of
Matagorda County’s labor
force of 17,491 in Oct. (16,887),
a total of 1,575 (1,575) were
