Wharton man receives 4-life sentences for drugs
WHARTON: Within 15 minutes a jury of seven women
and five men sentenced Travis Oneal Bluntson, 32, of
Wharton to four life sentences for drug charges. Bluntson
was found guilty of five counts of possession of a controlled
substance with intent to deliver. “I’m extremely thankful
for the jurors’ commitment to keep Wharton County safe
and all law enforcement officials safe as well”, District
Attorney Ross Kurtz said. Also pending in Austin County
is evidence involving Bluntson in an attempted capital
murder charge which included a police officer being shot
at but not injured. During the investigation of this shooting
the Texas Rangers found hundreds of prescription pills:
Hydrocodone, OxyCodone, Alprazolam, Morphine, and
Clonazepam along with street drug cocaine and bags for
distribution labeled with currency denominations. “The
state contended that Bluntson illegally possessed all of
these drugs and intended to deliver them as well,” said
Kurtz.- Wharton Journal Spectator
Expansion for El Campo meat processing facility
EL CAMPO: A Wharton meat processing plant is
expanding their facility in El Campo creating 20 jobs
over the next three years in the area. By Jr.’s Smokehouse
of Wharton “Choosing to expand in El Campo will be a
positive impact on the local economy in several ways,”
said Executive Director Chandra Spenrath. Increasing the
tax base with the new construction and site improvements
will overall decrease the tax burden on individuals stated
Spenrath. Construction is projected to begin early next year
and doors opening in the middle of next summer. Spenrath
believes this will increase awareness of El Campo within
the region and across the state of Texas. “This in turn could
be an added advantage for those interested in relocating
and/or expanding to El Campo. - El Campo Leader-News
Inept design plans to blame for flooding
NAVASOTA: According to O’Malley Engineers, L.L.R
President Kankel the inept design plan is to blame for the
two flooding events resulting in businesses in deep. “I
regret having to be here, but there is a design error that
we became aware of,” said Kankel. According to Kankel
the spillways at two intersections were raised therefore
causing the water to rise higher than in the past. The firm
along with their insurance company is covering the cost
of a remediation plan for this drainage issue. Water will be
in buildings if rainfall reaches 12 inches and if the rainfall
downpours 4 inches in 30 minutes. “This is a registered
downtown historic district, and it’s unfortunate that these
100-year-old buildings have flooded three times in the last
three years,” Rangel said.- The Navasota Examiner
Teacher perishes in flood waters
LOCKHART: During significant flooding in Caldwell
County, Tracy Ward, 51 of Lockhart, lost his life to the
raging flood waters. Upon losing control, Ward’s vehicle
had gone into a ditch and when he was able to get out of
the vehicle Ward was swept downstream by the swift rain
water. His body was recovered 200 yards from his vehicle.
Ward was the only occupant in the vehicle and was a teacher
at Smithville ISD. Exhausted effort to locate this individual
was by the Sheriff’s Office, volunteer fire fighters from the
surrounding areas, swift water rescue team, cadaver dogs,
DPS troopers and helicopter team members.- The Luling
