STP in midst of Unit 2 refueling outage
The South Texas Project
has safely started a sched-
uled Unit 2 refueling and
maintenance outage.
During the outage, about
one-third of the reactor’s
fuel assemblies will be
replaced with new ones.
In addition, thousands of
maintenance activities
are scheduled to enhance
equipment reliability. Plant
systems and components will also be tested
and inspected.
“Our team’s focus will be on conducting a
safe, event-free refueling outage,” said Den-
nis Koehl, STP Nuclear Operating Company
President and CEO. “Safety is our highest
priority, each and every day. It will be our pri-
mary focus during this outage.”
The two-unit nuclear facility, one of the na-
tion’s largest, began commercial operation in
1998 and 1989 respectively. The units are on
a staggered 18-month refueling cycle. Refuel-
ing outages are scheduled in the spring and
fall when electrical demand is lowest.
This is the
plant’s 33rd

refueling outage.
At the peak, approximately 1,100 contrac-
tors will be on-site to assist during the outage.
The majority of these contractors - who
come from across the nation - have worked
previous refueling outages at STP.
The contractors provide additional resourc-
es to effectively complete the outage work
scope. In addition, they provide economic
benefit to local stores, restaurants and hotels.
The plant is managed by the STP Nuclear
Operating Company and owned by Austin
Energy, CPS Energy, and NRG Energy. STP’s
two units safely produce 2,700 megawatts of
carbon-free energy, powering two million
Texas homes. To learn more about STP, visit

Alapha Club remembers Mrs. Lincoln
At the November 18
meeting of Alapha Club,
members continued their
discussion of First Ladies
by answering roll call to
the question: What do you
remember of a First La-
dy’s influence on fashion?
Most members mentioned
Jackie Kennedy and her
famous pillbox hat and
suits. This being the week
of the anniversary of JFK’s
assassination, many mem-
bers were focused on the
Kennedy s. Others men-
tioned Michele Obama,
Mamie Eisenhower, and
Nancy Reagan as First La-
dies who have left a mark
on fashion. Pat Yeager
and Donna Christensen
presented the program
on Mrs. Lincoln. Mary
Todd Lincoln was born of
privilege, and was strong
willed and outspoken in
her belief that her husband
would one day occupy the
White House. She married
Abraham Lincoln in 1842,
and became his strongest
advisor in all things po-
litical. However, once Mr.
Lincoln became President,
Mary found herself on the
outside of his circle of ad-
visors, as White House
staff took over those du-
ties. She was an extrava-
gant spender while in the
White House, renovating
and updating the furnish-
ings. She also spent a lot of
money on herself, and that
caused some friction with
Congress for Mr. Lincoln.
The Lincolns had four
sons, but the death of their
son Willie while they were
in the White House was
quite devastating to them.
Mrs. Lincoln went in to
seclusion after she lost her
son, then became obsessed
with occult practices and
held regular seances in the
White House to try to con-
tact him. President Lincoln
finally put a stop to that.
Shortly after President
Lincoln was elected to his
second term, he was assas-
sinated at Ford’s Theater.
Mrs. Lincoln went in to a
deep depression, eventual-
ly moving with two of her
sons to Chicago. Mrs. Lin-
coln suffered from mental
health issues the rest of her
days, and died in 1882 at
the age of 63 of a stroke.
