Wayne Gregory
Wayne Gregory of Edna
passed
away
peacefully
at his
home sur-
rounded
by family
Thursday,
July 4,
2013 at the
age of 54. Wayne was born
Sept. 12, 1958 in Yoakum to
Lonnie And Ruby Castellow
Gregory. Wayne endured a
very cruel and demeaning
motor neuron disease
(ALS).
Wayne worked hard all his
life to have things and pro-
vide for his family. He
worked for many farmers in
the area - the Cihal’s,
Kallus’s, and Hafernick’s.
He also worked in the oil-
filed industry with
Stone Well Service and Joe
Ferguson WaterWell
Service.
Wayne’s true passions
were hunting, gardening and
tractors, and teaching his
children and grandchildren
family traditions and values.
He took pride in all he did
and had, keeping his place
in Morales meticulous. His
high standards are instilled
in all and will be carried on.
He is survived by his lov-
ing and devoted wife of 34
years, Patricia Grewe
Gregory; children, daughter,
Courtney Berry and husband
Steven of Edna; son, Cody
Gregory and Desiree of
Victoria; his doting sister,
Debra Speer and husband
Chuck of Edna, Modelle
Foxell and husband Harry of
Hope, Janice Wyman and
Gregory
Officials ask
for feedback
After months of collab-
oration and the continuous
sharing of information
resulting in preliminary
flood maps, officials with
Jackson County and the
Federal Emergency
Management Agency are
now asking the public to
participate in a 90-day
comment period.
Homeowners, renters
and business owners in the
cities of Edna, Ganado
and La Ward, and the
unincorporated areas of
Jackson County are
encouraged to view the
preliminary flood maps to
better understand where
flood risks have been
identified. Those with
comments or who would
like to file an appeal have
from June 26 to Sept. 23
to do so.
An appeal is a formal
objection to proposed
base flood elevations or
flood depths, Special
Flood Hazard Areas
boundaries and zones or
floodways. Appeals must
be based on technical data
that show proposed maps
to be scientifically incor-
rect. Anyone who makes
an appeal must include the
method, data and analysis
used to support the claim.
A comment is an objec-
tion to a base map feature
change such as labels,
incorrect roads, jurisdic-
tional boundaries or any
other non-appealable
change.
Comments and appeals
should be sent to FEMA
through the local flood-
plain administrator.
Anyone who hasn’t had a
chance to participate in
local flood insurance
meetings or to review the
new flood maps is encour-
aged to contact their coun-
ty or community flood-
plain administrator. Other

No major changes
in county budget
By Lisa Shapiro
Staff Writer
Jackson County Judge
Dennis Simons said Jackson
County residents should not
see a major change in the
2013-14 budget.
A budget workshop with
elected officials and depart-
ment heads was held during a
special Jackson County
Commissioners’ Court meet-
ing on June 26.
Simons said commission-
ers are in the early prelimi-
nary stage of setting up the
budget. So far, planning the
budget has been a smooth
process and there hasn’t been
any real issues. He said the
commission doesn’t know
how much money there is to
work with yet in the budget.
Each county department head
brings in their request for
items needed in their depart-
ment for the upcoming year,
then the commission goes
over it with them.
Simons also said there has-
n’t been any big items
brought to the table yet. No
decisions have been made
during the last few budget
workshops.
“If there is a major item on
the budget we would already
know about it,” he said.
Jackson County commis-
sioners lowered the tax rate
from $0.5422 to $0.5185 last
year in the 2012-13 budget.
“I don’t think our budget
will be much different from
in the past,” he said.
“Because of inflation, it usu-
ally goes up. It also depends
on capital outlay items,
which hasn’t been addressed
yet.”
