It's not about surviving, but embracing the storm
With Tropical
Storm/Hurricane Isaac
churning out there some-
where in the Gulf of Mexico,
residents all along the coast
are getting their stockpiles of
water, food and gasoline in
case they get to know Isaac
“up close and personal.”
Everyone knows the basic
items for a hurricane sur-
vival kit. They are publicized
and reported on every year
during the hurricane season.
But did you ever sit down
and think what you really
need to survive a hurricane?
The recommended list is
basically “one size fits all.”
Well, if you are a woman
you know that no matter
what the tag says, nothing
fits everyone. So what may
be your neighbor’s ideal sur-
vivor kit may not help you
get through a challenging
time such as a hurricane.
Here’s my hurricane sur-
vival kit suggestions for a
less stressful disaster.
L A beverage other than
water. Note that this does not
replace water, but water does
get a bit boring and tasteless,
so something with a little

flavor is bound to make
things seem more like nor-
mal. The caffeine in a soda,
energy drink, or bottled cof-
fee drink won’t hurt either
when the kids are bouncing
off the walls and making too
much noise to sleep. You
will be all energized from
the caffeine that you won’t
want to sleep so everyone
will be happy.
2. Lots of batteries. Not
for flashlights and radios but
for all the handheld games
that will keep the kids occu-
pied and out of your hair.
Don’t forget earbuds so you
don’t have to listen to the
annoying electronic sounds
that emit from the machine.
3. Clean underwear.
Seriously folks, nothing
makes you feel bad like dirty
underwear. Make sure you
pack at least one week’s
worth for each person and
you will be amazed by the
happy faces.
4. Books. Lots of books.
In a storm you can’t count on
the Internet so forget about
your Kindle. Besides, there
really is nothing like holding
a book in your hands, turn-
ing the pages as you read
and flipping back to re-read
a particularly juicy part.
Simple pleasures are the
best.
5. Snacks. Canned food is
great in an emergency, but
you can only eat so much
Spam and Vienna sausages
before it takes its toll.
Repeat after me...Corn Nuts.
The perfect snack. After all,
it is a mixture of corn (veg-
etable) and nuts (protein),
the perfect food. And they
come in different flavors so
you don’t get bored. They
are so hard it would take a
lot of humidity to ruin them,
so it is the perfect survival
food.
6. Family photos. Not the
boring, posed pictures you
have taken over the years of
little Sally, Joe, and Aunt
Lulabelle. Pick out a pile of
the unposed shots captured
over the years when no one
was looking. The ones taken
on Easter morning of the
kids searching for their bas-
kets in their underwear. (The
ones you promised no one
would ever see.) These are
the story of your life and will
help you forget the mess
going on outside.
7. Spa accessories. That’s
right. All those items you
have purchased over the
years to pamper yourself but
never took the time to do it.
The foot soak that smells
like eucalyptus. The facial
mask. Pedicure set. Seaweed
wrap. Whatever. You will
have nothing but time and be
stressed out so what better
time to use these items to
help you relax. It only takes
a small amount of water for
a good foot soak and every-
thing looks brighter with
new polish. Take turns giv-
ing each other manicures.
What a wonderful way to
bond in an emergency.
8. Finally, candles.
Hopefully everyone has can-
dles in their survival kit, but
the ones I am talking about
are beautifully scented. Ones
that will evoke memories of
another time when things
were normal. Ones that can
mask the scent of unwashed
bodies after a week of no
water for bathing. Scented
candles will be your best
friend.
I’m sure everyone has
their own idea of survival
gear in an emergency. The
key is thinking outside the
proverbial box. Just because
everyone says you are to
gather certain items doesn’t
mean they can’t be creative.
When the power’s out, the
wind is blowing and you
know you’re not in Kansas
anymore, a few well-chosen
items might just make the
difference between survival
and embracing the storm.
